The Business of Being Born
It shows the scenario prevailing in today’s medical system, where most doctors encourage to-be mothers to opt for a C-section. Apart from that the frequent use of Epidurals, Pitocin and other modern interventions, that are unnecessary for birthing.
Business of being Born brings to the fore other birthing techniques like home births, water births and the use of midwives. When I got pregnant, doubts and apprehension lingered in my mind about handling labour and delivery and how I would go through it, but after seeing this documentary it helped to an extent in dealing with those thoughts and to actually revel in the joy of giving birth to a new life.
We went to a doctor who was pro-normal delivery, and many of my friends were of the opinion that C-section would be a painless experience as compared to natural birth or injecting epidural would help ease the pain, perhaps their opinion was based on what their gynaecs recommend.
Women have begun to doubt their ability to give birth and request for C-section, even when they can could have a completely natural delivery, the documentary suggests that only a tiny number of cases have complications where it becomes a necessity for interventions. Here’s a brief look at the documentary -
On the other hand, doctors play on their ‘patients’ lack of confidence and fear as well and choose to perform C-section since its a more convenient option for doctors. But the cost of an operation doubles as compared to a natural birth, because the woman spends longer time in the hospital, takes longer to recover and be able to perform routine activities etc.
In recent years the rate has risen to a record level of 46% in China and to levels of 25% and above in many Asian countries, Latin America, and the USA.
An important issue Business of Being Born highlights are the consequences of using drugs like epidural and pitocin which are given to woman in labour. Epidural anesthesia acts like a painkiller, and the woman can’t feel the natural pain of contractions and to speed up labour, pitocin or synthetic form of oxytocin is injected.
Giving birth is completely a natural phenomena, we forget that the human body has been perfected for reproduction by our creators, why shy away from the experience by choosing interventions. Another thing you must know is about Spinal Tap, two of my family members experienced this, its extremely painful and, one during a hernia operation and one at child birth.
Time for you to sit back and unlearn, don’t tamper with yourself, come back to nature!
