Some <3 please :)

At a point of time in my life when things begin to get really shoddy, a time when you asked the questions that nobody has answers to. Growing up can be difficult especially if you were one of those people that could not make sense of the human race as a whole. A time when our I was craving to get answers.

They sung words, that comforted me, like they were written with the sole purpose of comforting me. Pink Floyd became my bible, for a couple of years of my life I ate, slept and talked Floyd. They spoke, what I was trying to say, a band that made me feel that I am not alone, a band that helped me decide a lot of principals about living life is coming to town!

I missed them when they performed in Bangalore, but now Roger Waters is coming here, to Mumbai, live and kicking. Bhavika had done a write up on Pink Floyd Coming to Mumbai.

Who is Pink Floyd?

You may have heard, Another Brick in the Wall, the song that goes like we don’t need no education, we don’t need no thought control, is that where your knowledge of Floyd ends? If your Pink Floyd knowledge is limited, read on I am going to dish out enough of Floyd knowledge, to make you a Floydian in time for the concert.

Pink Floyd are an English psychedelic rock music band known for philosophical lyrics, classic rock songwriting, sonic experimentation, innovative cover art, and elaborate live shows. One of rock music’s most successful and influential acts, the group has sold over 250 million albums worldwide, and an estimated 73.5 million albums in the United States alone. Source Wikipedia.

Pink FLoyd, left to right: Nick Mason, Syd Barrett, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright. Issued in the booklet of, A Saucerful of Secrets.

Pink Floyd had modest success in the late 1960s as a psychedelic band led by the late Syd Barrett. Barrett’s erratic behavior forced his colleagues to supplement and eventually replace him with guitarist and singer David Gilmour.

After Barrett’s departure, singer and bass player Roger Waters gradually became the band’s leader and main songwriter. In 1985, Waters declared Pink Floyd defunct, but the remaining members (now led by Gilmour) continued recording and touring under the name, enjoying great commercial success and eventually reaching a settlement with Waters.

Thats the Pink Floyd Story in Short.

What happened to Syd Barret?

Syd BarretSyd Barret who was the leader of the Pink Floyd band in the start and wrote lyrics for their Debut Album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Syd Barret had a unique style, writing poetic lyrics, one of my favorites from this album is Bike.

I’ve got a bike, you can ride it if you like.
It’s got a basket, a bell that rings
And things to make it look good.
I’d give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

You’re the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I’ll give you anything, everything if you want things.

I’ve got a cloak it’s a bit of a joke.
There’s a tear up the front. It’s red and black.
I’ve had it for months.
If you think it could look good, then I guess it should.

You’re the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I’ll give you anything, everything if you want things.

I know a mouse, and he hasn’t got a house.
I don’t know why I call him Gerald.
He’s getting rather old, but he’s a good mouse.

You’re the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I’ll give you anything, everything if you want things.

I’ve got a clan of gingerbread men.
Here a man, there a man, lots of gingerbread men.
Take a couple if you wish. They’re on the dish.

You’re the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I’ll give you anything, everything if you want things.

I know a room full of musical tunes.
Some rhyme, some ching, most of them are clockwork.
Let’s go into the other room and make them work.

As the band became more and more popular, the stresses of life on the road and a significant intake of psychedelic drugs took their toll on Barrett, whose mental health had been deteriorating for several months. With Barrett’s behavior becoming less and less predictable, and his almost constant use of LSD, he became very unstable, often staring into space while the rest of the band performed.

During some performances, he would just strum one chord for the duration of a concert, or randomly begin detuning his guitar. The band’s live shows became increasingly ramshackle until, eventually, the other band members simply stopped taking him to the concerts. It was originally hoped that Barrett would write for the band with Gilmour performing live, but Barrett’s increasingly difficult compositions, such as “Have You Got It Yet?”, which changed melodies and chord progression with every take, eventually made the rest of the band give up on this arrangement.

Syd Barrett had one noted reunion with the members of Pink Floyd in 1975 during the recording sessions for Wish You Were Here. Barrett attended the Abbey Road session unannounced, “compulsively brushing his teeth”, and watched the band record “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” — as it happened, a song about him.

By that time, Barrett had become quite overweight, had shaved off all of his hair, including his eyebrows, and his ex-band mates did not at first recognize him. Eventually, they realized who he was and Roger Waters was so distressed that he was reduced to tears.

That’s enough information on the background of Pink Floyd. Now let me walk you through some of their work.

Pink Floyd’s Live Performances:

The band is well known for two of their live performances, Live at Pompeii and Pulse.

Live at Pompeii:

Live at Pompeii is a film featuring Pink Floyd performing six songs at the ruins of the empty ancient amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy. The performances of “Echoes”, “A Saucerful of Secrets”, and “One of These Days” were filmed from October 4, 1971 to October 7, 1971.

Pink FLoyd Pulse

The album was recorded during the band’s Division Bell tour in 1994, specifically the UK and European leg, which ran from July to October 1994

The Pulse Cd came with a blinking red LED on the side of the case, that flashed to the heartbeat heard at the end of Dark Side of the Moon. I have this cd case with me, although its tattered and the battery was dead when I bought it.

The live performance was known for its laser light show and synchronized videos playing in the background.

Pink Floyd’s Albums:

The Wall:

This album is one of the most intense albums made by Floyd, the videos of this album when played back to back become a movie based on the life of a rockstar, named Pink, who is hammered and beaten down by society from the earliest days of his life: having lost his father at war, smothered by his over-protective mother, and oppressed at school by tyrannical, abusive teachers who tried to mould him and the other pupils into the “right” shape for society.

Many Floydian’s feel that this is one of their best albums. Its one of my favorites as well. Here are a few lyrics of my favorite tracks from the wall.

Mother do you think they’ll drop the bomb?
Mother do you think they’ll like this song?
Mother do you think they’ll try to break my balls?
Mother should I build the wall?
Mother should I run for president?
Mother should I trust the government?
Mother will they put me in the firing line?
Mother am I really dying?

Hush now baby, baby, don’t you cry.
Mother’s gonna make all your nightmares come true.
Mother’s gonna put all her fears into you.
Mother’s gonna keep you right here under her wing.
She wont let you fly, but she might let you sing.
Mama will keep baby cozy and warm.
Ooooh baby ooooh baby oooooh baby,
Of course mama’ll help to build the wall.

Mother do you think she’s good enough — to me?
Mother do you think she’s dangerous — to me?
Mother will she tear your little boy apart?
Mother will she break my heart?

Hush now baby, baby don’t you cry.
Mama’s gonna check out all your girlfriends for you.
Mama wont let anyone dirty get through.
Mama’s gonna wait up until you get in.
Mama will always find out where you’ve been.
Mama’s gonna keep baby healthy and clean.
Ooooh baby oooh baby oooh baby,
You’ll always be baby to me.

Mother, did it need to be so high?

Don’t Leave Me Now

Ooooh, babe
Don’t leave me now.
Don’t say it’s the end of the road.
Remember the flowers I sent.
I need you, babe
To put through the shredder
In front of my friends
Ooooh Babe.
Don’t leave me now.
How could you go?
When you know how I need you
To beat to a pulp on a Saturday night
Ooooh Babe.
How could you treat me this way?
Running away.
I need you, Babe.
Why are you running away?
Oooooh Babe!

My Favorite song from the wall,

One of My Turns:

“Oh my God! What a fabulous room! Are all these your guitars?
[Film in background: “I’m sorry sir, I didn’t mean to startle you!]“This place is bigger than our apartment!
[Film: “Let me know when you’re entering a room”
“Yes sir!”]“erm, Can I get a drink of water?
[Film: “I was wondering about …”]“You want some, huh?”
[Film: “Yes”]“Oh wow, look at this tub? Do you wanna take baaaath?”
[Film: “I’ll have to find out from Mrs. Bancroft what time she wants to meet us, for her main …”]“What are watching?”
[Film: “If you’ll just let me know as soon as you can … Mrs Bancroft” “Mrs Bancroft …”]“Hello?”
[Film: “I don’t understand …”]“Are you feeling okay?…”

Day after day, love turns grey
Like the skin of a dying man.
Night after night, we pretend its all right
But I have grown older and
You have grown colder and
Nothing is very much fun any more.
And I can feel one of my turns coming on.
I feel cold as a razor blade,
Tight as a tourniquet,
Dry as a funeral drum.

Run to the bedroom,
In the suitcase on the left
You’ll find my favorite axe.
Don’t look so frightened
This is just a passing phase,
One of my bad days.
Would you like to watch T.V.?
Or get between the sheets?
Or contemplate the silent freeway?
Would you like something to eat?
Would you like to learn to fly?
Would you like to see me try?

Would you like to call the cops?
Do you think it’s time I stopped?
Why are you running away?

The strange part about the wall is that its non fictional, its based on parts of each of the band members lives. Roger Waters lost his father in world war two and the main character Pink can be compared to Syd Barret’s life.

A reference to Syd Barret’s reunion at the recording of Shine On You Crazy Diamond appears in the film Pink Floyd The Wall (1982), where the character ‘Pink,’ shaves off his eyebrows (and body hair) after succumbing to the pressures of life and fame.

Dark Side of The Moon:

DSOFTM Cover The Dark Side of the Moon is a 1973 concept album by Pink Floyd. It explores the nature of the human experience with themes such as birth, time, greed, conflict, travel, mental illness, and death.

Dark Side of The Moon has a strange Synchronization with The Wizard of the Oz Movie. Read about the Dark side of Oz

This Album talks about human nature. Let a song speak of what I they are talking about. My favorite from this Album.

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need.
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you’re on the street,
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed.
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight,
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.

And after a while, you can work on points for style.
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake,
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You’ll get the chance to put the knife in.

You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder.
You know it’s going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you
get older.
And in the end you’ll pack up and fly down south,
Hide your head in the sand,
Just another sad old man,
All alone and dying of cancer.

And when you loose control, you’ll reap the harvest you have sown.
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone.
And it’s too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone,
Dragged down by the stone.

I gotta admit that I’m a little bit confused.
Sometimes it seems to me as if I’m just being used.
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise.
If I don’t stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this

Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone’s expendable and no-one has a real friend.
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And everything’s done under the sun,
And you believe at heart, everyone’s a killer.

Who was born in a house full of pain.
Who was trained not to spit in the fan.
Who was told what to do by the man.
Who was broken by trained personnel.
Who was fitted with collar and chain.
Who was given a pat on the back.
Who was breaking away from the pack.
Who was only a stranger at home.
Who was ground down in the end.
Who was found dead on the phone.
Who was dragged down by the stone.
