Blog Action Day: Save the Environment

Joining in to spread awareness and tackle the global issue of climate change, thousands of bloggers celebrated October 15th as ‘Blog Action Day.’ I am writing about it two days late as I’ve been extremely tied up with work, but I guess when it comes to Global Warming everyone should contribute in their own small way.

What is Blog Action Day?

Global Warming

In its first year, ‘Blog Action Day’ basically was a initiative to get bloggers around the world to write about environmental issues on the same day in an attempt to raise awareness and tell people that environment affects one and all. This initiative, supported by the UN, received tremendous response from the bloggers’ community. Close to 20,603 blogs signed up on Blog Action Day website and they offered ideas to millions of people via blogs, or online diaries, ranging from planting more trees to how to recycle plastics.

The organizers of Blog Action Day haven’t left a single stone unturned. Here’s a video giving information about the Action day.

Lately I have seen lot of action taking place on this front, that’s because the situation is getting worse.

Looking Ahead:

A step towards reducing greenhouse emissions is use of hybrid cars which are lower polluters than other cars. Hybrid vehicles run on electricity and another fuel, which could be petrol, diesel or bio-fuel. The car owner has the option to drive the car using either electricity or petrol and can easily switch from one to another.

These vehicles help reduce emissions by generating power from an electric motor, burning less fuel for each mile travelled. The electric motor is powered by batteries that recharge automatically while you drive.Hybrid CarEveryone of us at some stage have owned or driven a hybrid vehicle. I have sat on a Mo-ped (a motorized pedal bike) which is a type of hybrid because it combines the power of a gasoline engine with the pedal power of its rider. Hybrid vehicles will hit Indian roads only next year when Honda Siel Cars India and indigenous Mahindra & Mahindra make their hybrid vehicles commercial. Other auto makers, such as Toyota and Ford, are also exploring the market for hybrid vehicles in the country.

Recycle Household Items:

One can contribute in many ways towards reducing global warming. Recycling of household items like jeans or eyeglasses. Old blue jeans can be used as pot holders, quilts, sling bags etc. Read things to do with old jeans.

Each year billions of CDs and DVDs are manufactured, while millions of these discs end up in landfills and incinerators. Compacts Discs, when recycled properly, will stop unnecessary pollution, conserve natural resources, and help slow global warming.

Eyeglasses can sometimes be re-used, often by people in developing nations, if handed in to a specialized recycler.

There are several such items which can be recycled like printers, print cartridges, monitors, utensils etc. Such tiny actions can save the environment and the world.
