Best Pictures of 2007
A picture speaks a thousand words. World Press Photo, the largest annual press photography contest, exhibits the best photographs of the year in 45 countries around the world.
The photo, taken by UK-based Vanity Fair photographer Tim Hetherington, was awarded the Photo of the Year 2007 by the World Press Photo jury. It tells the story of an exhausted US soldier resting in a bunker in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, reflecting the exhaustion of a man and the exhaustion of a nation. The picture would be a great momento for George Bush to remind him of his tenure in the White House.
The evacuation of dead mountain gorillas at Virunga National Park, Eastern Congo won first prize in the contemporary issues singles category. Killing mountain gorillas has been a regular occurence in Virunga National Park, which is suppose to consists of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. It is also Africa’s oldest national park, and home to just under half of the world’s 700 remaining mountain gorillas. Read conservation of gorillas.
Breathtaking is the word that first popped in my mind after seeing this picture. Freeride competitor Philippe Meier chased by an avalanche in Flaine, France won the sports action singles prize.
A basketball player pulling out the eye balls of another player, that’s height of barbarism. This image from Chris Detrick’s portfolio won him the third prize in the sports action stories category.
Considered to be one of the most stable nations in East Africa, Kenya was in utter turmoil post the announcement of the re-election of President Mwai Kibaki. The dire situation in Kenya is perfectly captured in this image below. Kenyan policemen chasing protesters who were looting goods from a shop in Kibera, a slum which is the stronghold of opposition in Nairobi. Thousands of youth across the country protested the re-election, which resulted in violence on the streets. This picture won third prize in the category of spot news singles.
