Craig Calfee’s Bamboo Bicycle
I want to ride this bicycle, I want to ride this bike! Both Bhavika and I have been considering purchasing cycles, for the exercise, sustainable energy and of course a massive boon to the environment, since it will wipe out the short trips that we make by gasoline consuming machines.
But what puts even that to shame is Craig’s bamboo cycle, yes Calfee Designs have sold over 200 bikes that are made with a frame made up of bamboo. That apparently makes a better ride quality and is comparable in weight to an aluminum bike.
Let’s here what Craig himself has to say about these bamboo bikes.
It just gets better Craig has his corporate social responsibilities in place, he has helped generate employment and an affordable means of transport in Africa where Bamboo grows a plenty. It also makes transporting water, people, food and other items up to six times more efficient.

Craig Calfee, has been experimenting with growing bamboo through carefully placed barriers. The shoots will then gain the bends and curves needed for frames and other components.
“It’s like bonsai basically, if you grow it in the shape you want it, it’s by far the strongest way to get it in the shape you want it,” he said.
At the moment though since all the bicycles are made to order, his workshop turns out only limited numbers and the cost of the frame is a staggering $2,700. Craig hopes that his growing frames are successful. This would enable him to get into mass production with fields full of Bamboo frames.
Although the bikes cost quite a bit, people are willing to spend that amount for an exceptional right quality, the green factor and a bike that is guaranteed to last a lifetime.Bamboo Bike Maker Grows His Frames, Bonsai Style
