Solar Panels on Graves in Spanish Town
Santa Coloma de Gramenet, a Spanish town outside Barcelona, is generating solar energy in a bizarre fashion. They have installed hundreds of solar panels above coffins at its cemetery.
Why a cemetery out of all places?
There are very few open and sunny places in this crowded city where 124,000 people are crammed into 4 sq km.
So the cemetery was the ideal place to set up solar panels. A small town has taken steps to tackle climate change, its a great thing and something we all can learn from.
This move wasn’t welcomed at first by the locals, until a public campaign was held to convince families of its benefits, and now more solar panels are going to be placed at the cemetery.
More importantly, the panels will create enough energy to supply to 60 homes every year, and it will keep about 62 tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. I wonder what would happen if many cities install solar panels, what an impact it would have on the atmosphere, there will be a major cut in CO2 emissions.
“The best tribute we can pay to our ancestors, whatever your religion may be, is to generate clean energy for new generations,” said the official who runs the cemetery and works in renewable energy.
