Glass Sculptures by Ralli Jacob

Ralli Jacob glass sculpture of Lehar 7up bottleHave you ever wondered what happens to those empty beer bottles which you discard in the bin? Some might go for recycling, but there are artists who turn them into beautiful glass sculptures.

If you are an admirer of artwork then you are sure to like these glass sculptures made from used bottles. We went for an art exhibition by a senior Indian artist Ralli Jacob, who is also known for his pottery.

The bottles were twisted, stretched or flattened to form art pieces which would faintly resemble its original shape. We spent a good amount of time at his exhibition that was rather small but Jacob was quite humble and a good-humoured man.

He shared with us the process of making glass sculptures in his own kiln in a charming hamlet in Alibaug, Maharashtra, that’s where he resides as well.

He first heats up the bottles and then experiments with its shape by stretching and compressing parts, or moulding it into a unique shape, some of them were so thin and elongated that it made me wonder how he managed to do it. Some of them were also colored to add more life to it.

It was surprising that in spite of the recession Jacob found a 10% increase in his sales as compared to his exhibition held last year. That’s a good growth in the market, considering each glass sculpture started from Rs 5000 and went up to Rs 25,000.
