Lumbini – Discovering the Origins of Buddhism

A beautiful morning in Pokhara and also our last, well, after spending three peaceful days here it was time to leave for Lumbini – the birthplace of Gautam Buddha and one of the four major Buddhist pilgrimage sites – located 291 km away, and leave Nepal from the Sunauli border, which is just 26 km. The distance might not be much but the mountainous terrain, zigzag roads ensures you don’t spe... »

The World Peace Pagoda Shines Over Pokhara

We had a relaxing time in Pokhara since we spent four days there, yes, I didn’t have to drive too much! So woke up late and after the terrible dinner at Everest Steak House the previous night it would only be fair for Bhavika to get some good food. So yet again we strolled through Pokhara market, bought a few things like a brass key holder for my sister, t-shirts with hand-made patterns for ... »

Drifting in the Serene Waters of Begnas Tal

Imagine waking up to the magnificent view of the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhare (or Fishtail Mountain) on the northern skyline of Pokhara. Its an amazing sight, and visible only in the morning when the skies are clear. We skipped breakfast to spend the day at Begnas tal (lake), which is located about 15 km from Pokhara market. There are eight lakes here and in fact the name Pokhara is derived ... »

But that din’t work. The next option was to find a mechanic, which was difficult, however,... »

out of the thick of the jungle

Into the Wild at Chitwan National Park

There we were stranded (at least that’s what we thought) in the middle of Chitwan forest close to a water body at awkward hours when animals generally venture out, waiting for someone from Jungle Island Resort to pick us up! After five minutes that seemed longer than usual, we heard voices, one, two, maybe more people talking at a distance. We shouted out, “hello, is anyone there?̶... »

Finally Crossing the Nepal Border by Road!

We were off to Gorakhpur after spending early afternoon at Varanasi Ghats. Around 70 km away from Gorakhpur is the India-Nepal border at Sunauli. Since the Sunauli border crossing closes at 9pm, we choose to stay at Gorakhpur for the night. Driving in Uttar Pradesh was always scenic and so was the Varanasi to Gorakhpur route as we passed these lovely wild grass with white blossoms. We had few hote... »
