The Art of Fighting, Without Fighting

Greetings ,

When you live out of the big city and move to the countryside its always nice to have friends visit you, especially those who have something meaningful to share. Since we’re expecting our second baby, two close friends chose to make the time to keep their schedules aside and visit us; a gesture that means a lot. <3 :)

During a conversation, my pal spoke about his father who used to recite to him martial arts’ philosophy and how much he used to enjoy it. He spoke about this one particular philosophy that has stuck with him all his life. I’m sure you must have watched the Bruce Lee movie, “Enter the Dragon”, well if you haven’t you perhaps can picture this.

A bunch of fighters including Bruce Lee are on their way to an island for a competition. One of the fighters seems to have an ego issue and is bullying and sometimes kicking around the guys working on the ship.

Then he approaches Lee and acts like he’s trying to punch him, but our man doesn’t even flinch. Then he asks him what his fighting style is, Lee replies, “It’s ‘The Art of Fighting, Without Fighting.’”

“Show me this Art of Fighting without Fighting,” he asks. Lee tries to move away, but he stops Lee from going away. Lee then agrees to show him, but with all the bags and luggage around, he asks him, “Don’t you think we need more space?” The “bully” agrees to fight on the beach of a nearby island and jumps on the lifeboat that is being tugged to get there.

Once that guy gets in the boat Lee unties it, and lets it drift away, and passes on the rope to the workers on the ship to decide his faith. This is The Art of Fighting, Without Fighting.

How do you apply this in our daily life? Well surely all of us are not Martial artists, but we do fight many battles, be it within ourself or with others. Not every battle needs to be fought, sometimes just going with the flow may lead to a resolution. The key is to choose the right battles to fight and the ones to let go off, instead of wasting your energy fighting things you cannot change or win at the moment. Rise above the situation, fight the smaller battles to give you a good grounding and understanding to progress to the bigger ones. Good Luck!

Four Signs You May Be a Warrior in a Garden

“It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.” There is a story in Chinese martial arts lore about “The Peaceful Warrior,” where a young apprentice asked his teacher why, if he was striving to be inwardly calm and at peace, did he need to learn the ways of a warrior.

“Would it not be more tranquil and serene to be a gardener and tend the plants?” he asked. “Tending the garden,” the master replied, “is a relaxing pastime, but it does not prepare one for the inevitable battles of life.

Never Not Broken: The Power of Falling Apart and Coming Back Together Again

“We think that the point is to pass the test or overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.” ~ Pema Chodron

6 Archetypes to Help Us Get in Touch With Our Shadow Selves

“The hero and the coward both feel the same thing, but the hero uses his fear, projects it onto his opponent, while the coward runs. It’s the same thing, fear, but it’s what you do with it that matters.” ~ Cus D’Amato,
