Heaven and hell are fundamental concepts in many religions and belief systems. As a child, I was told that sinning takes you to hell and doing good deeds or good karma is what takes you to heaven.

For a young child, it's easy to believe what the parents tell her, but as you grow up, you begin to question - are heaven and hell places we go to at the end of our lives?

‌
‌

Neil Gaiman said, “I think hell’s something you carry around with you. Not somewhere you go. They’re doing the same things they always did. They’re doing it to themselves. That’s hell.”

Heaven and hell are states of mind - it is something that we carry within us all the time. A thought-provoking Zen parable explains this further -

A big, tough samurai once went to see a little monk.

“Monk!”

He barked, in a voice accustomed to instant obedience.

“Teach me about heaven and hell!”

The monk looked up at the mighty warrior and replied with utter disdain,

“Teach you about heaven and hell? I couldn’t teach you about anything. You’re dumb. You’re dirty. You’re a disgrace, an embarrassment to the samurai class. Get out of my sight. I can’t stand you.”

The samurai got furious. He shook, red in the face, speechless with rage. He pulled out his sword, and prepared to slay the monk.

Looking straight into the samurai’s eyes, the monk said softly,

“That’s hell.”

The samurai froze, realizing the compassion of the monk who had risked his life to show him hell! He put down his sword and fell to his knees, filled with gratitude.

The monk said softly,

“And that’s heaven.”

Perhaps there is no heaven to go to, there’s only a heaven to find. We create our reality with our thoughts, by our ability to question everything, by revisiting our beliefs, by constantly working on ourselves - and then maybe, you bring heaven on Earth for yourself.

We wish you to create heaven on earth and overcome the obstacles (hell) that come your way!
