Hi ,

Recently our eldest son participated in the Waldorf Olympics, a tradition amongst Waldorf schools to hold an athletics event since 5th graders are at the pinnacle of childhood and this becomes a transformative experience of moving into and embodying the Greek archetypes.

So its not really a competitive event but more to do with seeking grace and excellence in the various activities like javelin throw, discus, sprint etc. Different schools from the western region of the country participated in the event.

During the practice sessions leading up to the event Kayde would come back and complain about his team that all the best players are in another team and we have some of the worst performing students.

One day he came home to say that we have a student who has Cerebral Palsy and how can we win, he seemed discouraged by the whole event. We just told him to do his best and not to worry about what happens.

During the event, Kayde did not get any reward for his performance, nor was he bothered about it but I was surprised as I expected him to come back with something as sports is more of his forte than studies.

I could see the smiles on the faces of proud parents of the winners but then something put a smile on my face. The mother of the child with Cerebral Palsy came up to us and said, during their practice you know nearly all the other children told my daughter that because of you we will lose and spoke to her rudely, but Kayde always motivated her and encouraged her to do her best.

This was something that put a smile on my face, our son may be average in the standards of the modern world, but he's already above average when it comes to things of the heart. That is the true spirit of humanity!

If the day ever came when we were able to accept ourselves and our children exactly as we and they are, then, I believe, we would have come very close to an ultimate understanding of what ‘good’ parenting means.
