This quote by Aldous Huxley above that we have on our facebook page brought forth a lot of discussion, and there was this one comment by a teacher that said,
"As an educator we have seen declines in reading and writing. Basically because students don't read anymore. It's all tic tok. Videos short snippets. Many young people no longer have the capacity for sustained critical thinking. The worst part is that reading literature correlates with the development of empathy. This explains a lot of our current political turmoil."
So being me I don't usually take things at face value, I had to fact-check it and I even found the research papers that supported this claim. Reading literature makes people more empathic, and as a matter of fact our civilization has been reading for quite a while.
But today social media and devices are taking over the time that was meant for reading and for some, it's now the focus point of their lives. Libraries are disappearing and overstimulating malls are frequented, how rare is it to see a teenager or an adult not using a phone?
What the future holds is not known, but with Australia recently banned social media for children under 16, there is always hope if more countries follow suit. Parents need to be consciously aware of what the effects of what exposure to tech at an early age can do.
Over stimulation and the craving for a continuous dopamine release is hazardous to not just young minds but ours as well, but for those who have not even finished their physical and mental development it's going to have far more effects.
