Make the Ordinary Come Alive!

Right from childhood we have been conditioned to examine only our external world, pushed to study, do assignments, fare well, get a job, start a family etc etc., but no one talks about the importance of living and cherishing the present moment, tuning into the sounds of nature, listening to your inner voice or enjoying the sound of silence.

I chanced upon this beautiful poem - 'Make The Ordinary Come Alive' by William Martin, The Parent’s Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Parents. Although the poem is for children, but there is something to learn for all of us.

Make The Ordinary Come Alive

Do not ask your children,
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is a way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and animals die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself!

We are always living for the future, working hard and struggling so that we have a secured future. While all this is happening, something is slipping away – the present moment; the only moment we are in control of. We often take for granted the ordinary moments, the simple things in life like a hugging your child or the glorious sunset.

If I had to ask you what was the most extraordinary moment/s of your life – what comes to your mind? Would it be the time when you bought the most expensive phone or dress or the time when you fell in love?

Much of our unhappiness stems from the fact that we are always looking for something better and ignoring what we already have. This breeds negative emotions like jealousy, greed, anger, resentment which do us more harm than good. Slow down! Take a deep breath! Let time stand still for a moment. Realise how beautiful the simplest and ordinary moments truly are! Be like a child who takes pleasure in the simplest events, unfolding all around them.
