What Karen is saying here is that we are so consumed by expanding our consciousness, becoming spiritually enlightened, or ascending to higher states of awareness that we forget the path towards gaining that higher state lies in simplicity, searching for beauty in the ordinary, finding meaning in the mundane. When we cultivate that in our home life, it becomes a meditative practice. Once an experienced dancer, writer of books on spiritualism, said, “We wash our plate every day, similarly, do we empty our mind and keep it clean. Do we wash our plate regularly or do we let dirt settle on it?” A metaphorical expression of bringing awareness to our daily chores, finding that intimate connection with the ordinary tasks, changing our perspective about it, and then it won’t be ordinary any more.
