As a child some of the stuff we're exposed to stays on forever, growing up in India as a kid in the 80's there was not much to choose from when it came to entertainment. My parents too had well defined boundaries as to what I could get exposed to which is a good thing.
One of the things that stayed with me is "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling, I'm not sure if it has had an influence on me wanting to stay in a forest but one of my favourite songs from that movie is Bare Necessities.
There's something about it that speaks so much of our intricate connection with nature and what the basic needs are for survival in this world. Yet our human side, wanting to do better, to give better, to get better not just in terms of materialism.
Let me give you a few examples, eating organic food to an extent you are rigid about eating - have to eat a particular grain because it supposedly has less gluten, you want to stock that and eat just that but when it comes to convenience of eating outside, you will eat whatever is put on your plate, since you really don't have any gluten allergy.
When it comes to an education, you choose it because its the best that one can get, even if its a struggle as its pushing your cost of living too high, as you move cities, pay rent just to have someone else's' values put into the children?
Where did the simple life go? The simple life that brought freedom to enjoy not just time, but a stress-free life. Organic is good, better education is good, but to adapt to situations when the time calls for it can help restore balance.
Every time you're down its an opportunity to recalibrate your life, by repeating the same patterns again you aren't going to make it back up to the top. Only when times get tough is when you begin to focus on what the bare necessities of life are.
When you're in thrive mode the surplus comes in and sometimes you don't realise how much is excess until you're pushed into survival again. Trim the fat and climb back out stronger. Here's the last part of the song it's the truth :)
