As an old adage goes, tough times, calls for tough measures. Although this requires some inspiration to get through it as it ain’t easy to keep your boat floating in this vast ocean of uncertainty. You never know what you will have to conquer on your voyage - sharks, storms, sinking, heavy rain, thunder. How do we survive all this? How do we hold the course? It is an ultimate test of resilience, of determination, of will to continue and not give in. Succumbing to the storm makes life easy, but it marks the end of your story.
If we show resilience, pull up our socks, and set the sail flying higher up in the sky, we can get through the storm on safe waters, gearing to face storms as and when they come. The key here is being resilient, and sometimes words of others can help us navigate on our journey.
Here are 5 poems that might alter the trajectory of our lives and give us a different perspective on life situations. May you enjoy this treasure of poems and hope it helps you rise above the storm, and may you find the sunshine.

Beannacht by John O’Donohue
"Beannacht" is the Gaelic word for ‘blessing,’ and it was a beautiful blessing to receive as well. This poem symbolises hope, inspiration and resilience when the going gets rough.
On the day when The weight deadens On your shoulders And you stumble, May the clay dance To balance you.
And when your eyes Freeze behind The grey window And the ghost of loss Gets into you, May a flock of colours, Indigo, red, green And azure blue, Come to awaken in you A meadow of delight.
When the canvas frays In the currach of thought And a stain of ocean Blackens beneath you, May there come across the waters A path of yellow moonlight To bring you safely home.
May the nourishment of the earth be yours, May the clarity of light be yours, May the fluency of the ocean be yours, May the protection of the ancestors be yours.
And so may a slow Wind work these words Of love around you, An invisible cloak To mind your life.

The Journey by Mary Oliver
The Journey is about new beginnings and getting out of your own way. It is about finding the light in a tunnel of darkness, finding your true self amidst the voices that hold you back - these voices are your negative thought patterns, and this dire need to cling on to the past and not letting go. But you finally leave all that behind and see the stars shining in the night sky!
One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice – though the whole house began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles. “Mend my life!” each voice cried. But you didn’t stop. You knew what you had to do, though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations, though their melancholy was terrible. It was already late enough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallen branches and stones. But little by little, as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds, and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own, that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world, determined to do the only thing you could do – determined to save the only life you could save.

The Door by Miroslav Holub
This poem is a metaphorical representation of the human tendency to resist change. The door is the obstacle or a symbol that prevents us from embracing new opportunities. ‘Go and open the door’ means to get out of our comfort zones and take chances even if there is no reward, take chances even if there is darkness - it will eventually clear and lead you on the path of self-discovery.
Go and open the door. Maybe outside there’s a tree, or a wood, a garden, or a magic city.
Go and open the door. Maybe a dog’s rummaging. Maybe you’ll see a face, or an eye, or the picture of a picture.
Go and open the door. If there’s a fog it will clear.
Go and open the door. Even if there’s only the darkness ticking, even if there’s only the hollow wind, even if nothing is there, go and open the door.
At least there’ll be a draught.

Wild Geese by Mary Oliver
Another classic poem by Mary Oliver, where she tells the readers to not worry about being good or pay penance for your sins, but follow your heart. She beautifully brings about our connection to nature, that regardless of your suffering and despair, the world moves on. No matter how lonely you feel, we can always lose ourselves in nature and feel a part of this natural world.
You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting - over and over announcing your place in the family of things.

The Guest House by Jalaluddin Rumi
Beautiful piece of advice of welcoming the trials and tribulations of life. Whether we judge them as pleasant or unpleasant, greet them as guests that will soon depart!
This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.
