Hi ,
“Animals are the bridge between us and the beauty of all that is natural. They show us what's missing in our lives, and how to love ourselves more completely and unconditionally. They connect us back to who we are, and to the purpose of why we're here.” ~ Trisha McCagh, Stories from the Animal Whisperer: What Your Pet Is Thinking and Trying to Tell You
Our visit to an animal shelter yesterday was such a heart-warming experience. Located in the countryside, is the Probably Paradise shelter for abandoned, injured, rescued animals run by a brave and bold old lady named Roxanne, and when I say animals it includes many four-legged (some three and two legged as well) friends. Dogs, cats, donkeys, mules, horses, cows - it can be overwhelming at first, but when you stay calm and tune in, you can actually connect with the animals around.
The horses (one Excalibur and the other Jamie), particularly, were very curious, they came close, sniffed baby Cahya, looked at her, touched her with their nose. Roxanne telling me to relax, “He (Excalibur) is only checking her out, he likes babies.” I found myself between two horses holding Cahya, trying to stay calm and not freak out. Coming so close to a horse felt so different, and calming. In the cacophony of sound (dogs barking and donkeys braying), I felt some kind of inner peace.
Roxanne talks, touches and hugs them, “Don’t drop the plate down,” she was heard telling the horse who likes tea as he licked some off the plate. At another place in the pond dug up for rainwater harvesting were two donkeys playfully pushing each other, and in the stable was a newborn foal trying to walk, and he hid behind his mother, from us. In another stable, an abandoned cow, Parvati, gracefully walks to Roxanne wanting to be caressed.
The whole scene felt so absorbing and welcoming that it makes you wonder what the hell are we doing in life. This is ‘life’. Each animal with their own temperaments, injuries, living together in perfect harmony, made for a beautiful picture.
Have you had any interesting experience with animals?
As Anatole France beautifully puts it, “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened.”
