Hi m
On a recent trip to the beach, I was frightened of going deep into the sea where my feet wouldn’t touch the sea bed. Apart from not knowing how to swim, I always thought of being the courageous one. But after this incident, I realized that I was not as courageous as I thought I was. :(
We all fear something - fear of not finding the job you always wanted, fear of losing a loved one, fear of water, fear of not meeting your financial needs, fear of lizards and rats, fear of chronic illness, the list is endless. We either know our fears or bury them deep within until it manifests or takes a tangible form. We cannot defeat fear, banish it, or cast it aside. The only way to work through fear is to accept, work with it, and merge with it. When we run from fear, we are like a fish desperately trying to swim away from a monstrous predator. When we let fear in, we are the observer outside of the tank watching the whole ordeal take place. When we see fear from this perspective, we realize that fear has little to do with ourself, and more to do with our idea of ourself (the way I thought I was courageous until the situation arose and I had to face my fear).
After a few days of spending time in the vast ocean, I was more at ease, not completely okay, but still a lot better than the first day of going to the beach. This was just one instance, there are many cases when I have felt fear very close, but when you constantly think about your fears, you give it more power, and when you stand up to, it slowly fades away. The best way to fight fear is to surrender to it, and in the process you’ll learn more about yourself than you would have otherwise.
