Hey ,
Hope your weekend is awesome! Stories seem to be 'trending' for us and today's one is not really metaphorical.
It's a tale of two fish the Guppy and the Greenland Shark, the guppy is a fish that has a long list of predators. Birds, other fish and even crabs enjoy the guppy.
Yet the guppy has to survive and they thrive because they reproduce quickly and early. A guppy produces offspring - the first batch of babies - before its two months old and keeps at it every month. Each batch, in ideal conditions, can be 50 - 60 at a go....
But there's a downside to this, to survive and reproduce at this speed all the guppies' energy goes into reproduction. They literally have very limited resources for healing or fighting disease and by the time they are a year or two old, their time is up.
There's no point in conserving energy for repair when they are at the bottom of the food chain. But then we have the Greenland Shark which has no predator and lives in the depths of the ocean.
This allows the Greenland Shark to take its own sweet time to grow, it reaches reproductive age at 150 years and goes on to live up to 500 years. They conserve their energy and use it for cell repair and maintenance and this enables it to fight disease and are virtually immune to cancer.
Now lets take a look at us, humans, from the book Ikigai: The Japanese secret to a long and happy life, the people in a village called Okinawa live the longest and one of the reasons attributed to this is they take it slow!
We've all heard the saying stress kills, but not many talk about how not being stressed and living a slow life heals. Consciously eating, showing gratitude, exercising and even immersing yourself in nature are all of benefit!
So slow down, take a deep breath in, and let your stress out with every breath you take. Life is wonderful, you're the medicine <3
