Two months ago we saved some muskmelon seeds to plant later. Our 9-year old son took few seeds and planted them in a small plastic container. The seeds sprouted in a few days and he was thrilled. He started to take care of it everyday, tending to it, making sure the soil was always moist, he nurtured it without being told to.
Then yesterday, something amazing happened. The plant blossomed with multiple yellow flowers and what was surprising that it happened in such a small container. How is this possible that a plant would flower in such a small-sized container, we all know the size of muskmelon. Then I realised that the plant responded to his care, attention and concern it was getting everyday. Plants respond to the love and attention they get, which we can easily forget, but they also share the space in the same house!
I am not anthropomorphizing here, but when a person who waters and cares for the plants enters their space, the plants feel less stress as compared to someone who plucks their leaves and their stress levels go up. Plants sense and react to their environment.
I feel it is so easy for children to connect with plants or to nature, because we are all part of nature after all!
