Are You Communicating Like an Ant?

When was the last time you had a real conversation?

Not small talk about how good or bad the weather is and how's it going, but pouring out your heart.

How did it feel?

Did it feel like you have connected with the other person on a different level?

Did it bridge the gap between you and the other person?

Did you feel more fulfilled?

Conversations or rather words are important in our lives, it has the power to either make your day or totally ruin it. Sometimes when you let these words play around in your mind, they even have the power to ruin years if not your entire life.

So many times we talk to people we know, either friends, family or acquaintances, on a shallow level. Would you say that it made any difference to our lives? Is it worth the energy you put into it?

The movie Waking Life sums it quite beautifully ~

A: “Excuse me.”
B: “Excuse me.”
A: “Hey. Could we do that again? I know we haven’t met, but I don’t want to be an ant. You know? I mean, it’s like we go through life with our antennas bouncing off one another, continuously on ant autopilot, with nothing really human required of us.

Stop. Go. Walk here. Drive there. All action basically for survival. All communication simply to keep this ant colony buzzing along in an efficient, polite manner.

“Here’s your change.” “Paper or plastic?’ “Credit or debit?” “You want ketchup with that?” I don’t want a straw.

I want real human moments. I want to see you. I want you to see me. I don’t want to give that up. I don’t want to be ant, you know?

Leave the ant approach behind, make time to actually ask people what moves their heart, stirs their soul, makes them sing with delight or jump for joy. Those are the kind of conversations that you will remember, that will stay with you, that will add value to your life and help you grow.
