Resilience - A Lesson from Nature

Gardening has been the most favored pursuit for me to restore, revitalize and get the creative juices flowing. Our younger son, Kavie, who happens to have a green thumb, planted sunflower seeds a few months ago. The plant grew healthy and tall, but as it grew tall, the stem began to bend at the bottom due to the weight of the plant.

I was really upset about it. I kept the pot closer to the trellis for some support, and hoped that it survived. In a few days, I was astounded to see that the plant had survived, and the stem was not bent anymore, but it had fixed itself.

This was such a beautiful lesson on being resilient. Nature is our best teacher. This amazing recovery from being bent - almost broken - to healing itself and standing tall.

What do we learn from it?

When you feel you have lost hope, may you find something that evokes hope and resilience within yourself.

Life circumstances, situations might break us or tear us apart, but becoming more resilient will toughen us up, turn the tables on adversity and improve our lives. Challenges, obstacles become our friend - they teach us to bounce back.

Part of this process is to take control of our mind, the negative emotions and thoughts that can suck you in. Instead, keep the hope alive and may be, just may be, we not only face the storm, but ride it!

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
