The Psychology of Divergence, Part One

“Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.” ~ Frank Zappa

Divergent was a best-selling novel by Veronica Roth that was turned into an action film in 2014. It’s based in a dystopian future society that is divided into five factions, which serve to maintain social order and control over individuality. The story is a giant metaphor for real life for those with imagination enough to “see” it.

In this article we will delve into the deep metaphors inherent in the Divergent story and go into how we can use these metaphors to widen our perspective and empower ourselves to be more courageous and less passive in our lives.

Stories like Divergent though fictional, can teach us a lot about the human condition as long as we are willing to learn from the lessons they have to teach. As Tom Stoppard said, “Words are sacred. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.”
