The parenting journey is filled with ups and downs of life, the biggest compared to any other job, I would say, because you are raising humans – the future generation. The way you raise your children is going to determine the future of Mother Earth, society or culture (call it what you like).
“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” ~ Frederick Douglass
We are aware of the current state of the world as we know it – fast-paced, result-oriented, FOMO-driven life. If it’s not on social media, it cannot be true or happening, kind of world. The onus lies on parents to be aware and mindful of their actions.
I have spoken a lot about the current situation where handing over a phone to them is easier than holding a conversation with your child, taking a picture is more important than seeing if the child is actually comfortable with it. You get the drift!
Each parent is on their own journey, operating, largely, from their own conditioning. However, holding space for your child is even more important nowadays.
It is said that a child chooses his parents. When you hold that belief/viewpoint, it becomes imperative for parents to live up to it, without feeling the pressure.
What is to Hold Space for your child?
When a seed is planted, it needs all the care and attention for it to grow into a healthy and strong tree. You make a support structure around it that protects it from falling or getting destroyed. The seed is the child, and the support structure are the parents/caregivers of that seed, and parents give the child protection until he is ready to spread his wings.
While the structure is up, the plant needs regular care – sun, water, manure, pruning etc., – this becomes the challenge for parents to be present to the ever-changing needs and nurture them in the most appropriate way.
Do they need protection? How do we protect our children? How do we hold space for them in these maddening times, so they bloom beautifully and meet their full potential?
