Getting to Know Sai Baba of Shirdi

1

“What is our duty? To behave properly. That is enough.”
~ Sai Baba

Who is Sai Baba of Shirdi?

India is a land of spirituality, giving birth to several spiritual gurus or leaders, some revered as God. The term Sai Baba has been given to or used by a few of them, but to me when someone says Sai Baba I automatically associate it to Shirdi Sai Baba.

No one clearly knows the origins of Sai Baba of Shirdi, he himself was never bothered about where he came from and said at times he was born from a Hindu Brahmin family and then at times he claimed he had a Muslim upbringing.

It wasn’t important to him, the only thing important were the messages and teachings that he put forth. An interesting thing is that he’s the only person who both Muslims and Hindus revere as a Saint/God in India.

In a time when division and hate are rampant his teachings based on love, forgiveness, charity, inner peace and devotion can guide us onto a better path. He never discriminated based on religion or caste and his teachings themselves utilised components from Hinduism and Islam.

He also lived in a mosque which he gave a Hindu name Dwarakamayi, and all his teachings have been handed down in a book called Shri Sai Satcharita that was written by his disciple.

Sai Baba’s influence on me

“You must be a lotus, unfolding its petals when the sun rises in the sky, unaffected by the slush where it was born or even the water which sustains it.”
~ Sai Baba

During my childhood, one day when I was on my way to school, I saw a bumper sticker that said, “Sabka Mallik Ek”. This is when I asked my dad what does it mean, he said it meant that everyone’s God is one.

For some reason, this line has stuck with me till date, but I never knew it was part of Shirdi Sai Baba’s teachings. In Maharashtra Shirdi Sai Baba is a huge phenomenon, people walk miles across the state bare-footed to pay homage to the place he taught from and was buried.

I often questioned this practice of devotion but not anymore, I would rather do the little I can and assist them if they need something as they pass by. But for the longest time I was not attracted to Sai Baba, the statues made of him and the clothes and ornaments that adorned them painted a picture that did not sit well with me.

Until on a trip to Bodhgaya there was this picture hanging there who it took a few moments for me to realise who it was. This is what sparked my interest in Sai Baba and was astonished to hear of the miracles he performed.

Shirdi Sai Baba’s miracles

When you see with your inner eye. Then you realize that you are God and not different from him.”
~ Sai Baba

I had met a friend over the weekend for a couple of beers, and I asked him what he thought about Sai Baba, he said I don’t know much but I know the story of the Kichdi (Pulses and Rice cooked together with spices) he made. He told me that few of the villagers came in and asked him if he could give them some food to eat. He said sure and he put a big Cauldron on the fire and started stirring it.

He never had any supplies, but he just acted as though he put something in, over time more people gathered and the aroma of the dish spread around and in the end the line of four to five people ended up being over a hundred. But Sai Baba wasn’t worried, but the people who were in the start of the line were getting annoyed. They were saying, so many have come now we won’t get anything much to eat.

Sai Baba told all of them not to worry, and he served them all, no one got less, even though the cauldron could hold food for far less there seemed to be no limit to the amount that came out of it. But that’s not all he did, may of Sai Baba’s devotees claim that he has done multiple miracles, although some seem very difficult to believe they are worth reading.

This part has been taken from Wiki,

Sai Baba’s followers claim that he performed miracles such as bilocation, levitation, mind-reading, materialisation, exorcisms, entering a state of Samādhi at will, lighting lamps with water, curing the incurably sick, and appearing beaten when another was beaten. During Darshan (sacred sighting) he appeared to people in the form of Sri Rama, Krishna, Vithoba, Shiva and other gods depending on the faith of devotees.

According to his followers, he appeared to them in their dreams and gave them advice. His devotees have documented their experiences.

Nisargadatta Maharaj, said, “Sai Baba is rooted in the absolute.” When you’re part of the absolute what isn’t possible?

Teachings of Sai Baba

“Life is a mosaic of pleasure and pain – grief is an interval between two moments of joy.”
~ Sai Baba.

Understanding the Teachings of Sai Baba

Below are a few passages from the Sri Sai Satcharitra, that will help you get a peek into Sai Baba’s teachings.

“He who loves Me most, always sees Me. The whole world is desolate to him without Me, he tells no stories but Mine. He ceaselessly meditates upon Me and always chants My name. I feel indebted to him who surrenders himself completely to Me and ever remembers Me. I shall repay his debt by giving him salvation (self-realization). I am dependent on him who thinks and hungers after Me and who does not eat anything without first offering it to Me. He who thus comes to Me, becomes one with Me, just as a river gets to the sea and becomes merged (one) with it. So leaving out pride and egoism and with no trace of them, you should surrender yourself to Me Who am seated in your heart.”

“You need not go far or anywhere in search of Me. Barring your name and form, there exists in you, as well as in all beings, a sense of Being or Consciousness of Existence. That is Myself. Knowing this, you see Me inside yourself, as well as in all beings. If you practice this, you will realize all-pervasiveness, and thus attain oneness with Me.”

“Be wherever you like, do whatever you choose, remember this well that all what you do is known to Me. I am the Inner Ruler of all and seated in their hearts. I envelope all the creatures, the movable and immovable world. I am the Controller – the wire-puller of the show of this Universe. I am the mother – origin of all beings – the Harmony of three Gunas, the propeller of all senses, the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer. Nothing will harm him, who turns his attention towards Me, but Maya will lash or whip him who forgets Me. All the insects, ants, the visible, movable and immovable world, is My Body or Form”.

To my understanding. Sai Baba never claimed he was God, but that all of us should revere the one true Creator who lives in every living being.

Erasing Negative Labels and Identifying Yourself

1

All of us have been trained by education and environment to seek personal gain and security, and to fight for ourselves. Though we cover it over with pleasant phrases, we have been educated for various professions within a system which is based on exploitation and acquisitive fear.
~ Jiddu Krishnamurti

We are all by products of our environment and what we have been conditioned to. Ask anyone what they identify with and you will have Black, White, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, American. From the time we’re young we have been carried to Church, the whole conditioning of being a Christian and that being the only way to Heaven or as a Hindu or Muslim you will have an upbringing on similar lines.

When we’re in school we’re taught about wars and how great our Individual countries are, plus we get to hate on countries, such as in India we all have at some time disliked Pakistan. Although for me the only time this was at the surface was at the time of an India Pakistan match, the only cricket I used to watch in my life.

The structure is so intact that all these normal things are actually skewed towards hatred, racism and most importantly division.

The Benefits of Division

Our labels keep us separate, it creates a perfect dualistic scenario of us and them. This is beneficial to systems who want to stay in power, systems that want to exploit and systems that thrive on greed. The Divide and Rule technique, in politics and sociology, is gaining and maintaining power divisively. Historically, this strategy was used in many different ways by empires seeking to expand their territories.

Elements of this technique involve:

  • Creating or encouraging divisions among the subjects to prevent alliances that could challenge the sovereign, and distributing forces that they overpower the other.
  • Aiding and promoting those who are willing to cooperate with the sovereign
  • Fostering distrust and enmity between local rulers
  • Encouraging meaningless expenditures that reduce the capability for political and military spending

When you read the above techniques used, I’m positive that you will find some of these methods, if not all you, being used. So the actual benefits of divisions isn’t for the lay man or the masses in general, there are carrots no doubt, but more for the man in charge.

“We experience ourselves our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.”

5 Signs of Inner Turmoil and What to Do About It

0

“I never realized how literally we battle demons. Often alone. It is a relentless skirmish with vicious wraith-monsters devouring us from within. We Fight. And resist for a time. Ultimately, desperation forces a cry for help. But where oh where are the valiant knights? When did they die off?” ~ Richelle E. Goodrich

Life can throw us out of balance, as we struggle to keep the boat afloat
Swaying with the waves of change that keep dashing against the boat.
Hold on tight or let go, should we give in to these uncertain times?
So much pain and turmoil are buried deep within.
Dig it out, dig it out, remove it
Or you will lose your mind,
The mind was lost long ago
It is the soul now that feels the woe.
Inner turmoil engulfs us,
Takes away our peace of mind,
Weeks and months have passed by,
With no end in sight.

(This is something I penned down related to our current situation.)

When you are engulfed in inner turmoil, it can be difficult to look beyond it. It catches hold of you like a spider wraps his web around its prey. It can leave you feeling worried, agitated and depressed. It drains your energy like you have been starving to feel alive. In order to feel good, you continue to distract yourself with meetings, browsing through social media, shopping, food, alcohol, the list is endless.

Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and you have to be okay with that. The uncertainties of life can often throw you out of balance. Things might be falling apart around you, either a financial slump that can really suck you in a blackhole, or not finding a job you want, or some untoward incident in life or the loss of a loved one, all this can lead to an inner turmoil that begins to eat you up from within.

Here are 5 signs of inner turmoil, even if you don’t admit it

Overthinking mind

Overthinking is a common tendency of the monkey mind. When you are going through an inner turmoil, the mind creates double havoc, like a rat stuck in a box. It wants to break free from the shackles, but it can’t.

You feel lost and restless when people are talking to you. You don’t participate fully in a conversation, out of lack of interest or too much going on in your head. It always seems that your mind is preoccupied. You are never really present in the moment, and others find difficulty getting through to you. You keep thinking the same thing over and over again, as your thoughts have taken complete control over you.

Like Osho said, “The Mind: A beautiful servant, A dangerous master.”

When you are overthinking, the mind has become the master, and it has got a tight hold over you. This is not good news, the sooner you realise that, the better it will be to take back the reins of your life.

Lack enthusiasm

You don’t have any enthusiasm or zest for life, both have gone amiss. Nothing excites you any more, the inner spark that used to shine through you has disappeared. You might think that it is due to stress or work pressure, but there is something brewing within that needs your attention. There is inner turmoil which needs to come to the surface. Sometimes it becomes difficult to figure out what is actually bothering you.

Experience frequent mood swings

You experience frequent mood swings. One moment you feel happy and the next moment you are agitated with someone because they have pushed your buttons or triggered you. The smallest of things begin to annoy you, like someone forgetting to close your room door while you are busy working. It becomes very easy for you to lose your cool and let it out at the first person who gives you the smallest opportunity..

Feel out of control

Inner turmoil can lead to frustration and restlessness. The more you dwell on it, the more frustrated you get, it is like a vicious cycle that keeps going on and on. You feel your life is out of control, as a result you begin to live in fear. The mind is riding on fear, while your heart tries to tell you to cam down. There is this constant conflict between the head and the heart. The more we dwell on it, the more it (inner turmoil) grows.

Silence can be deafening

You find the sound of silence deafening, because the inner chatter is so loud that silence seems scary. You don’t find solace in nature, “it feels too quiet here,” you say to yourself. The inner chatter has amplified and become more powerful when you are quiet or in a peaceful environment.

It’s not the silence you’re uncomfortable with, but the voices coming from within. The urge to be surrounded by this external noise is the only way to escape from the inner turbulence.

Here are 5 ways to deal with your inner turmoil

There is a story of Buddha and his disciples that will calm a person going through an inner turmoil –

Once Buddha was travelling with a few of his followers. While they were passing a lake, Buddha told one of his disciples, “I am thirsty. Do get me some water from the lake.”

The disciple walked up to the lake. At that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy and turbid. The disciple thought, “How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink?”

So he came back and told Buddha, “The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to drink.”

After about half an hour, again, Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake.

The disciple went back, and found that the water was still muddy. He returned and informed Buddha about the same.

After sometime, again, Buddha asked the same disciple to go back.

This time, the disciple found the mud had settled down, and the water was clean and clear. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said,” See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be, and the mud settled down on its own — and you have clear water.

Your mind is like that too! When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don’t have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless.”

Be kind and loving to yourself

All you need is love
all you need is love, love
Love is all you need
~ The Beatles

Love is the magic antidote to all your problems. When you get caught up in the madness of the mind and feel the turmoil growing within you, you have to take a pause, a break from your hectic life and feel what is going on within you. Become aware of it.

Do a check of your inner landscape, feed it with positive words, experience the calmness of being centered in yourself. Like the Buddha said, “Give it a little time.”

“Fortunately, analysis is not the only way to resolve inner conflicts. Life itself still remains a very effective therapist.” ~ Karen Horney

When I was going through an emotional upheaval last year, I went for Vipassana – the meditation technique that works wonders on the body, mind and soul. I found inner peace amidst the muck that had accumulated within me. This was momentary for me as I have not been able to keep the practice, but there is always a start. You can follow whichever meditation technique resonates with you and slowly untie the knots in your mind.

Remember to be kind and loving to yourself, the same way you would be to a good friend who is experiencing turbulence in their life.

Find out the cause of your inner turmoil

Introspect on what is causing this turmoil within you – is it low self-esteem, issues to fit in a new place or setting, acceptance issues, self-worth, suppressed emotions, inner child issues, childhood trauma, financial woes, whatever the issue is, become aware about it. Once it is in your consciousness, then you can take the next steps towards healing yourself.

Open your heart chakra

Often, emotional issues are related to the heart chakra – the energy center of love, compassion, forgiveness, and empathy. A well-balanced heart chakra can help transform negative emotions into positive ones. Yoga can help alleviate the distress symptoms related to this chakra, so you are open to receiving and giving love.

Here are a few heart-opening poses that can help to open your heart chakra – Bridge pose or Setubandhasna, Forward bending or Uttanasana, Camel pose or Ustrasana, and Cobra pose or Bhujangasana. Follow the practice of asanas with chanting, the root sound of the heart chakra is ‘YUM’. This beej mantra works on the same frequency as the heart, and you can chant this mantra along with  OM.

Nature is the antidote for all our problems. Spend more time outdoors, go forest bathing, walk barefoot, feel the earth kiss your feet, all this works on opening your heart chakra. Allow your heart to be filled with love and feel the inner turmoil ease out.

Let the ordinary come alive

“In those moments when our inner turmoil has really quietened, we find significance in things we wouldn’t expect to find significant at all.” ~ Alan Watts

Find awe and wonder in your day-to-day life. Even if it is a mundane walk around the same neighborhood, if you maintain a childlike curiosity, you will find something extraordinary in the ordinary. This also helps to practice gratitude and be present, instead of feeding our inner turmoil.

Like Mary Oliver says, “Pay attention, be astonished, tell about it.”

We go for walks around the society on most days, there are times when I feel really bored to walk on the same path again and again that has a row of buildings on one side. But there is always something new we discover with the kids, like yesterday we saw a huge swarm of insects flying in a synchronized manner to form a pattern that resembled a genie coming from a bottle. It was magical.

The other day, my 6-year-old son showed me a bird resting in its nest. These small discoveries are what makes reality a little more tolerable. It can help us to stop feeling victimized by our thoughts and harness our monkey mind.

I am so sorry, I love you, Please forgive me

The ancient Hawaiian practice of Hoʻoponopono (pronounced HO-oh-Po-no-Po-no) is a beautiful tool to heal and forgive oneself and others. The word ho’oponopono roughly translates to “cause things to move back in balance” or to “make things right.”

Inner turmoil is also connected to the suppressed emotions, and forgiving would release these pent-up emotions, and bring feelings of self-love. Chanting “I’m Sorry, Please forgive me, Thank you, I Love You” will “cleanse” yourself of negative feelings. I have tried this chant on several occasions, and have always felt lighter, have felt an inner shift towards peace and harmony.

Here is the complete process of doing Ho’oponopono.

Here is a lovely meditation on staying calm in uncertain times.

This Letter is to You. The you That’s had a Rough Week.

“This letter is to you. The you that’s had a rough week. The you that seems to be under constant storm clouds. The you that feels invisible. The you that doesn’t know how much longer you can hold on. The you that has lost faith. The you that always blames yourself for everything that goes wrong. To you. You are incredible. You make this world a little bit more wonderful. You have so much potential and so many things left to do. You have time. Better things are coming your way, so please hang in there. You can do it.”

7 Buddhist Koans and Their Meanings

0

Buddhist koans also called Zen Koans are a guiding light in the darkness of life. They have been used for centuries by Zen teachers to help students understand their true nature, to step beyond the use of rationality and intellectual cognition into the realm of non-rational and intuition.

Buddhist Koans are like short stories, and riddles that sometimes are straight forward and sometimes need the listener or reader to sit with it, engage with it and ponder over it. Once the true essence of a koan is known to the listener, it causes an inner shift, a change in awareness, and it liberates our thoughts.

They are simple in words, but the human mind is so complicated and sophisticated that we find it difficult to comprehend. Koans are simply a tool, an aid to self-inquiry and deep realization.

Tools are as essential in cultivating the spiritual life as they are in cultivating the soil of a garden. For many Zen practitioners, koans have proved an effective way of understanding the problems that arise on the spiritual path and gaining insights to help resolve those problems.

In order to utilise the koans most effectively, one requires an understanding of what it is and how it is used.

“It is not achieved by looking out of the corner of your eye to see if everybody else is getting the same results as you or by trying to find out what others have already discovered. It is achieved by going down into one’s own inner, secret place and asking there for a direct encounter with the world, independent of convention.” ~ As explained in Sitting with Koans

There are no sure shot answers to a koan, it largely depends on one’s experience of the universe, of oneness, of unity, and the experience of reality. It is a state of consciousness.
