Surya Namaskar: The Sacred Salutation in Yoga

“The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind & the harmony of the soul create the symphony of life,” reads BKS Iyengar’s quote on Yoga, the founder of Iyengar Yoga and recognised as one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world.

Yoga is a profound science of unfolding the infinite potentials of the human mind and soul
Yoga is more than 5000 year old profound science of unfolding the infinite potentials of the human mind and soul

Yoga, an ancient Indian spiritual science for more than 5000 years, has been known to nourish and heal the mind, body and spirit. The literal meaning of the Sanskrit word yoga is ‘to add’, ‘to join’, ‘to unite’, or ‘to attach,’ and that union is of one’s consciousness with the higher forces or universal consciousness.

I choose to learn yoga to help deal with the chaos of city life, something to calm me down and clear the cluttered mind – the mind that was functioning at the rate of the fast-paced city life. For me Yoga was the answer that triggered a slow healing process of the inner self, apart from rendering mental clarity.

There are several branches of Yoga – like Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Raja Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Bhakti Yoga. Most of them are more or less based on specific postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), relaxation techniques (pratyahara and dharana) and meditation (dhyana).

Surya Namaskar: Salutations to the Sun

Surya Namaskar or sun salutation poses asanas and breathing chart
Surya Namaskar includes a set of 12 fixed, cyclic postures synchronized with the breath, which detoxifies and stimulates almost all the organs of the human body

One of the most important sequence of asanas would be Surya Namaskar, which means salutations to the Sun, a way of expressing gratitude to the sun for sustaining life on this planet. Surya Namaskar includes a set of 12 fixed, cyclic postures synchronized with ones breath, which detoxifies and stimulates almost every organ of the human body.

So even if you practice only these 12 asanas, its enough to benefit from Yoga, and if done early morning is even better as the morning rays have therapeutic properties.

Sun is the divine source of energy and has been worshiped around the world – The Greeks called the Sun god Helius, the Romans referred to him as Titan and Hyperoin, the Egyptians called him Ra. In Mexican culture, he is Kikich Ahau, the Germans call the Sun Sol, in Chinese culture, the Sun represents Yang (Pingala) and the Moon represents Yin (Ida).

Each of the 12 Surya Namaskar poses have 12 corresponding mantras chanted (verbally or in your mind) before each posture. Mantra chanting must be done with intent, to have a powerful and penetrating effect on the mind and body.

Surya namaskar and corresponding mantras and chakras to focus on
Surya Namaskar is best done with mantra chanting and focusing on a chakra with each pose

The significance of these mantras is that each sound like ‘Aum’, ‘Hreem’ awaken the blocked energy, and activate the chakras in the human body. This practice can also be performed with special concentration on each Chakra. Take a look at the video to see the mantras for each pose.

The Surya Namaskar is best done early morning on an empty stomach.

Using sacred tree oil in your practice

At the break of dawn when the birds start to sing, I start warming up first with stretching poses, and then move on to Surya Namaskar.

I also apply little bit of the Sacred Tree Oil on the third eye region – its a blend made from different trees like Neroli, Mimosa, Frangipani, Bergamot, Sandalwood, Rosewood, Cedarwood, Copal, Fir and Pine. The tree oil instantly opens and activates the vibratory core, clearing all the blockages in the nadis.

This combined with Surya Namaskar and the morning rays unfolds into a very rejuvenating experience. I can feel the radiating energy of the sun instantly energising and it takes me in a state of bliss and calmness – this experience makes me aware of my shortcomings and helps bring clarity to my mind.

Benefits of Surya Namaskar:

  • It benefits joints, ligaments and the skeletal system by improving posture, flexibility and balance
  • Boosts blood circulation
  • Benefits the Endocrine system and enables the various endocrinal glands to function properly. These include the thyroid, parathyroid and pituitary glands as well as the adrenal gland, testes and ovaries
  • Helps people suffering from insomnia
  • It is good for the heart and stimulates the cardiovascular system
  • Tones up the digestive system by the alternate stretching and compression of abdominal organs. It activates digestion and gets rid of constipation and dyspepsia
  • It stimulates the lymphatic system and supports respiratory system health, as well
  • Influences the pineal gland and hypothalamus to prevent pineal degeneration and calcification
  • One of the best techniques to keep your sugar under control in Diabetes
  • It gives vitality and strength. It also reduces the feeling of restlessness and anxiety
  • Surya Namaskar relieves stress, improves concentration and gives inner peace

The results are never immediate; it always comes with practice over a long period of time. It’s much more than just an exercise, although people have been coming up with their own versions of Yoga, packaging it as the means to stay in shape.

But the fact is that Yoga makes one spiritually aware of the interconnectedness between your body, mind and spirit, and in the process awakening the dormant Kundalini energy! Yoga is the way of life…

I would like to end with a beautiful quote by Paramahansa Yogananda, “Yoga is a simple process of reversing the ordinary outward flow of energy and consciousness so that the mind becomes a dynamic center of direct perception no longer dependent upon the fallible senses but capable of actually experiencing Truth.”

13-Year Old Replicates Fibonacci Sequence to Harness Solar Power

Aidan, replicated the Fibonacci Sequence in trees to invent a new way of harnessing solar energy!

The future of our planet lies in the hands of our children and when a 13-year old boy, Aidan Dwyer, uncovers the mystery of how trees get enough of sunlight in a crowded forest and applies it to solar energy you know that all is not lost.

On a trek through the forest Aidan, from Long Island, New York, pondered on how all the leaves get enough of sunlight and figured out that trees spiral up using the Fibonacci sequence.

The fractal nature of trees allows each leaf to get sunlight and he pondered on why we don’t use the Fibonacci sequence in the placement of solar panels for us to harness energy from the sun.

So he came up with his little invention to generate the maximum amount of energy using the fractal principals of nature. Aidan explained, “My design is like a tree, but instead of having leaves it has solar panels at the ends (of the branches).”

Check out the video below –

Hope this video inspires more parents to let their children wander through forests and study nature!

Graham Hancock’s TED Talk ~ the War on Consciousness

16

I have been an avid fan of TED talks and we have even featured a few TED videos on this site. TED itself has definitely helped in spreading a lot of knowledge and showcasing some awesome people. But when TED pulls down content and doesn’t offer a good enough reason as to why, you have to be a little curious.

Graham Hancock’s talk on, ‘the War on Consciousness’ at TEDx Whitechapel was pulled down, and now a debate page has been put up, quite strange and it points to the fact that TED is not here to bring about change especially when it comes to invoking consciousness.

Graham Hancock talks about something very interesting; he connects ancient civilizations that evolved their consciousness by consuming psychoactive plants or fungus such as the Amanita muscaria, he talks about how cave drawings are related to visions seen during altered states of consciousness.

He then talks about Amazonian Shamans who discovered Ayahuasca and how could they combine the two plants out of thousands of species in the tropical forest to create their magical brew. Hancock also explains his personal Ayahuasca experience and how it changed his life and how it can benefit the entire species to have an experience like this.

He ends up with how today, exploring consciousness is trampled upon by governments and ruling forces, Hancock states that this shouldn’t be allowed as its an individual’s choice to explore consciousness.
the effects of the war on c
Well we do agree with what he says, especially towards the end where, we as a collective need to evolve our consciousness to solve problems such as war, poverty, food, drugs and so many more that have been created by our current level of consciousness.

As Albert Einstein puts it, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.”

Watch the video and see if you find reason for it to be pulled down from TED? Don’t forget to let TED know how you feel.

‘Lifting the Skirt’ with Amanda Sage’s Art

11

‘Empowering’ was the first word that popped in my head when I went into/entered the visionary world of artist Amanda Sage. Based in Los Angeles, Amanda aims to create portals that open to the infinite possibilities of being and expressing, to help remember and re-discover who we really are, where we originate from and where we are headed.

One of the main reason I love visionary art is because of the experience of losing yourself into multiple dimensions blended to perfection to narrate a cosmic story on a single canvas. Through her art, Amanda seeks to challenge the viewer to question and evolve out of ignorance and dissolve the conditioning by the society.

Fractal Enlightenment got in touch with Amanda to know more about her art, inspiration, her experience with the pioneer of visionary art – Ernst Fuchs – and what lies ahead.

“I feel driven to explore and push the boundaries of what I see and understand and at the same time seek balance and beauty through my art. I would say that the path has defined the result and that visionary art choose me.

As a child I remember seeing colored energy fields around people, and I feel that through painting I am remembering and looking even deeper,” she said.

Her adventurous spirit carried her to Bali, then on to Vienna, Austria to study classical painting with Michael Fuchs, resulting in becoming a long time painting assistant to Ernst Fuchs. “At times it was the most difficult thing that I knew. When I was working with him, he was like a slave driver who expected me to be painting or doing something for him all the time.

At the same time though, there was so much genius wrapped into many of the projects, and I really had to learn to be flexible. The level of unwavering commitment that he has for his art and vision was inspiring to say the least. And most of all how he would always look at his work with fresh eyes and challenge himself and the viewer.”

Ana Suromai visionary art by amanda sage
Ana Suromai – Women have been lifting their skirts for centuries to ward off evil and enhance fertility. This symbolic act is also found in mythologies of various cultures, specifically in those of ancient Egypt, Greece, Persia, Ireland, Africa, Indonesia & Japan

One of her most talked about piece is ‘Ana-Suromai,’ derived from the Greek word meaning ‘to lift the skirt’. According to Amanda, this painting is an outcry a visual denouncement of the corrupt system that has brought our world to a state of chaos, based on greed, war profiteering, and the mindless consumption by the masses.

“It symbolizes the awakening of our personal power, shocking one into introspection as this system is in the process of crumbling.” This painting was unveiled at the 2011 Burning Man Festival in the Nevada Desert.

If you look closely you will find that an egg is a recurring symbol in many of her paintings, Amanda explained, “I consciously began using an egg in 2006 after going on a vision quest to find the perfect form that I could put anything in and feel completely safe to explore and unfold within.

This form appeared to me in a painting titled ‘Dreams,’ where a mystical snake held an egg in its mouth. I see it now as a window or doorway into infinite realms of reality.”

Often developing these ideas takes a lot of effort and one is always confronted with having to make a choice.

She explained, “When I am painting, I often find peace, and/or a battlefield that whisks me into a problem solving world…Even as I go down dark, destructive paths looking for the light, the pressure of those places drives me to see where I want to go even clearer. Sometimes you have to get lost to find yourself.”

Its always difficult for an artist to be able to pick one painting that reflects their journey on this path, but Amanda gave it a shot.”The painting that speaks the most of the dream I care so deeply about is ‘Regeneration’. It is deeply personal and reflects a journey that I am on and discovering.”

Regeneration – “It has an overall uplifting vibration about it and is about celebration, healing and love.”

Seeking inspiration from various visionary artists like Frida Kahlo, Leanora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Salvador Dali, Mati Klarwein, Robert Venosa and Alex Grey, Amanda has played a prominent role in the growing visionary art movement through exhibiting, teaching and participating in major festivals.

Dung Beetles use Stars to Navigate

1

It’s funny as human beings we feel we are the most intelligent species, but we are most disconnected from our natural environment. A certain discovery like this show that even the tiniest insect like beetle is connected to the cosmos.

The African Dung Beetle uses the milky way as a positioning system. Dung is its most valuable and important resource, as it spends most of its life gathering and living with it. They even lay eggs in dung so the larvae can feed on it.

dung beetles celestial navigators

So it becomes essential that they pick up a dung ball and reach their home the fastest that they can cover the shortest distance. How does a beetle with a brain the size of a rice grain manage to do this successfully even after being disoriented from its original course?

The answer lies in the navigation system the beetle uses to find its way home, similar to bees and ants, during the day the beetle determines its position with the help of the sun. But in the night the beetle uses the polarized light to position itself that we as humans can’t see.

Watch this awesome talk by Marcus Byrn, called “The dance of the dung beetle”

dung beetle capabilitiesEvery time the beetle begins his journey, he climbs aboard a ball of dung and does a little dance on it, this dance is basically the beetle getting his bearings right, it can then plot a straight way home and follow it even with obstacles in its path. They also exhibit traits of thermo-regulation as they cool their feet by licking it when they climb on the dung ball.

Till date humans, birds and seals are the only living organisms known to use celestial navigation techniques, the dung beetle research has opened up the doors to the possibility of nocturnal insects relying on the stars as well.
