The Basics of I Ching, the Chinese Divination Tool

9

I Ching is an ancient, sophisticated fortune-telling tool used by the Chinese to predict the pattern of events which will govern and shape our destiny. Terence McKenna studied the I Ching and developed his interpretations in the form of Timewave or Novelty theory.

But what exactly is the I Ching and how does one use it?

The I Ching Basics: What Is It and How Do I Use It?

The I Ching is one of the world’s oldest divination texts, with some claims putting it over 3,000 years old The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is an oracle even, that has helped millions by providing advice and guidance to life’s questions, both complex and basic.

The beauty in consulting the I Ching is that it does not provide answers for you — but rather it helps you find the answers that already exist within you.

The most common method to consult the I Ching is tossing the coin

Mode of Consultation

There are multiple ways to consult the I Ching. One of the earliest methods utilizes sorting and counting yarrow sticks, but as time has gone on other ways have evolved.

The most common method now has become coin-tossing, perhaps because 50 yarrow sticks are harder to come by, possibly because the coin-tossing method is faster — either way, the mode by which one consults the I Ching is not as important as the mindset that one has while they are consulting.

The Importance of Mental Focus

Focusing on their question is one of the most important things that people consulting the I Ching can do. If there is one piece of advice that I can give to beginners, it is that they fill themselves with their specific inquiry as they are consulting the I Ching.

A practitioner will, for the time that they are tossing coins or drawing reeds, meditate deeply on their question. After they have built their hexagram line, they will empty themselves of the inquiry, like a vase emptying itself of water.

The results fill the inquirer with suggestion, so it is imperative that the practitioner has room to receive that suggestion.

This may sound difficult, but with even just a little practice, the novice will start to notice the effects.

How to Consult the I Ching?

The I Ching is not something that somebody has to learn, so much as something somebody just has to do. You’ll need a copy of the I Ching, 3 coins, and a pen and paper.

1. The first thing you will do is ask your question. You don’t have to say it out loud if you don’t want to, but be sure that you are concentrating on it mentally (mentioned above). Your question should not be a yes or no question, and should allow for a considerable amount of time for a real-world manifestation.

For example, instead of asking something like “Should I go out today?” you would want to ask something closer to “How can I become more in tune with the universe?” or “How can I make my relationship better?”

These questions allow you to take time in realizing, manifesting, and becoming the answer you are looking for.

2. As you are meditating on your question, toss the three coins. From bottom to top (not top to bottom), you will record one of four different outcomes.
• 2 tails, 1 head = Yang, signified by a solid line
• 1 tail, 2 heads = Yin, signified by a broken line
• 3 heads = Changing Yang, signified by a solid line with a knot in it
• 3 tails = Changing Yin, signified by a line broken by an “x”

Repeat this step six times, until you have a hexagram.

3. If you cast no changing Yin or Yang, you will skip this step. If you did, you are going to create a second hexagram utilizing the opposite symbol in place of the changing symbol.

For example, if you had one changing Yin in your first hexagram, you will create a second hexagram that is identical, except that it will have a Yang in the original changing Yin’s place.

4. If you have one hexagram you will look up its configuration in the I Ching. If you have two, due to a changing Yin or changing Yang symbol, you will look up both hexagrams. The first hexagram, with the changing symbols, will represent your current situation.

Your second hexagram will be the answer to your question. There are 64 hexagrams in all that correspond to the 64 chapters in the I Ching. Use the chart below to match your hexagram to the corresponding chapter.

5. The readings are not straightforward, and, as stated before, you must meditate on the reading and let its results fill you like tea in a tea cup.

Depending on which translation of the I Ching is being read, the hexagram’s language may differ, though the meaning of the message will be the same. Take the reading into account as a suggestion, meant to lead you to the answer, and remember that the reading itself is not the answer.

Now that you know the I Ching basics, try consulting the world’s oldest divining text.

Dr Masaru Emoto on Human Consciousness and Water

30

Dr Masaru Emoto, the Japanese scientist and water researcher, revealed the true nature of water and how thoughts and vibrations affect the molecular structure of water. In his years of doing research with water, through high speed photography of thousands of water crystals, Dr Emoto has shown the most beautiful crystals are those formed after the water is exposed to the words ‘love and gratitude.’

The fact that the human body is made of 70% water, our thoughts can have profound implications on our health and the well-being of the planet.

Dr Masaru Emoto revealed the effect of thoughts on the molecular structure of water

He discovered that water from clear springs and water that has been exposed to loving words shows brilliant, complex, and colorful snowflake patterns, while water from polluted sources or water exposed to negative thoughts forms incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colors.

Fractal Enlightenment had the opportunity to interview Dr Emoto. He sheds light on the responsive nature of water to human emotions which can be utilized to heal mankind and earth, the Holy water of River Ganges and high vibrations of hemp to combat nuclear radiations in Fukushima.

You can also read about Emoto’s experiments with water.

What sparked your interest to discover the mystery of water?

ugly-water-molecule-structure-before-the-prayer-at-Fujiwara-damFirst, I was using water with information to cure people’s diseases, and it gained a lot of good results. However, people did not believe that because one needs to see in order to believe. I was thinking how I can make this visible and one day, I found a book about snowflake crystals and I thought that this was it.

A snowflake is basically water, so I thought if I freeze the water and use a microscope to see the insides of a water molecule, I could capture something in there, that’s how I came up with the water crystal technology.

You mentioned that you used water with information to cure people’s diseases, and it gained a lot of good results? How can water be used to cure diseases and what kind of diseases?

I used Hado (vibrational) measuring device called MRA which can measure negative emotional vibration that a human has and when it is detected, opposite vibration can be added to the water and by drinking that water, the negative feeling will go away.

water-molecule-structure-after-the-prayer-at-Fujiwara-damHow do positive thoughts affect us, the environment we live in, and the planet as a whole?

Positive words, photos and prayers can make water create beautiful hexagonal water crystals, but negative ones will create ugly looking water crystals. Any living creature is made out of water, and even minerals and the planet itself are the same. The positive thoughts can make any related things beautiful and harmonized.

In this fast-paced world when people are stuck in a routine, how do you think people can maintain a positive outlook?

Let your actions be based on the thoughts of love and gratitude. Love is a giving energy and gratitude is a receiving energy. If you always have these two words in your mind and your actions are based on these concepts, you can naturally give people positive energy.

What are the basic differences in the crystalline structure of water?

In order to improve the conductivity of information, there needs to be geometric designs with golden proportion that can be seen in pyramids. In case of water, its water structure shows superimposed pyramids three-dimensionally and the more perfect it is, the more beautiful hexagonal water crystals it becomes.

In India, the holy river of Ganga (one of the polluted rivers in the country) has high levels of toxic pollutants, but in spite of that thousands of devotees bathe in the Ganga each day with the belief that it prevents diseases. Do you think the positive thoughts of devotees affects the Holy Ganges to an extent that it prevents large-scale epidemics? Research has also stated that Ganges has special self-purifying properties. Do you think the molecular structure of River Ganges might be distorted, but yet have some healing vibration?

I think god created water with love as an active energy and gratitude as a passive energy. Water in River Ganges is sacred, and it is god’s water for the Hindus, so the water contains lots of love and gratitude for them. Therefore, with these positive thoughts, water in River Ganges which is physically polluted, can become holy water.

I would also imagine if a pious Hindu learnt how to take water crystal photos, they would get the most beautiful looking water crystals from the water in River Ganges.

Critics claim that your work is ‘pseudoscience’ and doubt the process behind it, what is your response to such statements?

Current science exists in a 3 dimensional world, but the world of water is multidimensional, and I believe water crystals are in the world of 4th and 5th dimension. So they can say my research is pseudoscience in lower dimension, but I hope it to be called parascience.

I came across a video of you on the planting of hemp at Fukushima because of its high vibration levels, what is the effect of Hemp’s vibrations?

Radiations exist in the world of vibration and hemp is also a plant in the world of vibration which has high frequency. Hemp represents a positive plant and with using its high frequency, hemp can activate the polluted soils of Fukushima positively.

Are you currently doing any new research work that you would like to share with us?

Now my focus is issues in Fukushima. I already have technology and water to protect from nuclear radiations. It is more like activity but I make this water and send it to people and children in Fukushima.

What technology do you plan to use in Fukushima?

It is the technology that was invented by Russian Scientists, and it is the water technology to combat with nuclear radiations.

What are your views on 2012 and what effect will it have on the human race or our planet as a whole

I believe when the true education for water prevails anywhere in the world, the condition for the planet will be liveable. Otherwise, a lot of natural disasters like Tsunami and flood will happen, resulting in a lot of sacrifices of human lives.

About Masaru Emoto

Dr Masaru Emoto is an renowned researcher who has gained worldwide acclaim by showing how water is deeply connected to our individual and collective consciousness. Born in Japan, he is a graduate of the Yokahama Municipal University’s Department of Humanities and Sciences with a focus on International Relations.

In 1992, he received certification from the Open International University as a Doctor of Alternative Medicine. Dr Emoto is the author of several bestselling books, including The Hidden Messages in Water, The True Power of Water, and The Secret Life of Water. He heads the worldwide Hado Instructor School where he teaches the ancient principle of hado, or life-force vibration.

McKenna and Braden’s Fractal Nature of Time

6

The repeating pattern of fractals form an important element of time and space; its the core of our existence. Different religions and cultures like Hinduism, Chinese, Buddhism, Hopi Indians, Mayans, Incas believe in the cyclical nature of time and the same belief has been advocated by renowned spiritualists.

Like Terence McKenna – the American ethnobotanist, philosopher, psychonaut and shaman – was instrumental in popularizing the belief that a major event looms on the horizon in the year 2012 through his Timewave Zero theory. It’s a very fascinating discovery by McKenna, who accidentally stumbled upon the I Ching, an ancient, sophisticated fortune-telling tool used by the Chinese to predict the pattern of events which will govern and shape our destiny.

Mckenna decoded the most ancient King Wen sequence, which is an arrangement of 64 hexagrams or divination figures in I Ching or ‘Book of changes’.

Each hexagram occurs in 32 pairs, and the second one of each pair is the inversion of the previous hexagram, except for the eight symmetrical hexagrams that remain unchanged after rotation (1 & 2, 27 & 28, 29 & 30, 61 & 62). If you observe the image you will see that each figure is composed of six broken or unbroken lines, these represent yin and yang respectively.

Timewave theory king wen sequence hexagrams iching

In the King Wen sequence the individual lines are made up of both Yin (broken lines) and Yang (solid lines). The concept of change and balance is inherent in the hexagrams.

McKenna noticed an obvious pattern in the number of lines that change between each pair and within each pair and decided to build a mathematical construct based on the sequence of hexagrams in the I Ching. What emerged out of this was the notion that time had a structure, and time itself was not simply a place where you put events, but time followed a fractal pattern so that at every level it reflects this sequence.
The creators of the I Ching had actually figured out the basic structure of time!

He plotted the various integral events that have shaped our history, and the entire graph, representing the beginning and end of time, can be seen duplicated when one looks at a smaller span of time; so events happening in a particular period resonate with another event happening in a different epoch.

Terence McKenna Timewave Zero

The video above is very informative as compared to others based on this topic, here McKenna explains the King Wen sequence and his Timewave theory.

He cited examples of two different eras which are resonantly related to the events of other times. One of them was the period when Pyramids of Giza were built and rise of the Nazi in Germany. When you think of it, there were quite a few similarities – the word ‘Pharaoh’ and ‘Fuhrer’ both have some etymological root, both used slave labour to build their architectural construction and both leaned heavily on the Jews. These events were separated by thousands of years and operated in different parts of the world, yet were connected by the wave generated by the I Ching.

As the Timewave pattern moves forward, the fractals become smaller and smaller approaching zero point or singularity date predicted to be December 21st 2012. Timewave Zero was improvised and codified into a software program that seemingly mapped major moments in humanity’s evolution with the Timewave’s peaks and valleys.

After going through numerous sites, I also came across articles that suggest McKenna’s belief in his own Novelty theory fading away in the 1990s and his brother and partner in his journeys – Dennis McKenna – too mentioned that he was the biggest skeptic on the Timewave in spite of being involved in it.

Gregg Braden’s Fractal Time

Gregg Braden, renowned author and speaker of the New Age movement, in his book Fractal Time, incorporated McKenna’s Timewave concept to show how everything from war and peace between nations to our most joyous relationships and personal crises are the returning patterns of our past.

As each pattern returns, it carries the same conditions of previous cycles—fractal patterns that can be known, measured and predicted! Braden explains more about in the video below –

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x7nFIwBaPI

Braden suggests that recurring cycles carry a ‘choice point’ that allows us to choose a new outcome for the cycle. We can change the future by identifying key events from our past and recognizing the pattern that projects the same events into the future, and perhaps avoiding the same mistakes.

gregg braden fractal time
Gregg Braden, author of Fractal Time proposes that all patterns – both personal and planetary – are cyclic and that man can identify the seed event and change the future

Braden has devised a simple tool, Fractal Time code calculator (you can click on the link), that gives an easy access to the patterns that unfold as nature’s cycles. It shows when we can expect the conditions of the past to play out again as our present or our future, and because cycles of history are made of space and time, when the time repeats, the conditions of the space that it carries also repeat. Try it out, detailed explanation on how to use it is given as well.

Chinese philosophers understood the cyclical nature of time long ago, like Chuang Tzu, who lived around the 4th century BCE, said, “Time cannot be arrested. The succession of decline, growth, fullness, and emptiness go in a cycle, each end becoming a new beginning.”

The ancient Hindu Vedic scriptures describes the creation and destruction of the universe as a cyclic process, which repeats itself forever. Similarly, Buddhism too regard time as cyclical consisting of repeating ages that happen to every being of the universe between birth and extinction.

Age-old beliefs, interpretations and different concepts on time signify the same thing – the interconnectedness with the elements governed by fractals and the outcome of which remains to be seen, but the signs of change are visible.

The Medical Benefits of Marijuana

Nature has the cure for every disease, we only need to be aware and open to accepting the cure. I came across a heart-rending story of a three-year old boy, Cashy Hyde, who successfully fought his second bout of Terminal cancer after his father, Mike Hyde, started giving him Cannabis oil without the knowledge of the doctors. Here are several cases of the astounding benefits of Medical marijuana in treating diseases.

When Cashy was 20 months old, radiologist’s discovered a 4.5 cm, stage 4 Brain Tumor. When they tried to perform a surgery to remove it, they could get out only 10%, since it was wrapped around his optic nerve. They diagnosed Cashy with a Malignant and Aggressive Cancer classified as a PNET Brain Tumor.

David Spriggs’ Illusionary 3D Art

7

At first glance, ‘Red’, looks like a huge blob of red smoke rising from the ground, but a closer look and, the image transforms into 3D space where the colour is objectified.

This is a unique technique developed by David Spriggs, a British-Canadian artist, to paint on multiple transparent sheets which are stacked together to create an illusionary experience.

Each form he creates looks suspended in space and the viewer’s perception changes as he navigates around the installation. Its an interesting technique, which seems simple and not hidden from the viewer, yet, it exudes a sense of mystery and wonder.
