A Parable by Buddha on the Brave and Foolish

0

In the past, we have covered a few of the teachings of Buddha. We also spoke about human life interpreted by Buddhism. Today, we have a very interesting story that speaks about timidity, bravery, and the rewards of courage. I am not going to give away any part of it. Continue reading.

Here’s a parable by Buddha on the brave and foolish

A man living near a cemetery heard one night a voice calling him from a grave.

He was too timid to investigate it himself but the next day he mentioned it to a brave friend, who made up his mind to trace the place where the voice came from the following night.

While the timid man was trembling with fear, his friend went to the cemetery and sure enough the same voice was heard coming from a grave.

The friend asked who it was and what it wanted.

The voice from under the ground replied, “I am a hidden treasure that has decided to give myself to someone. I offered it to a man last night, but he was too timid to come after it, so I will give it to you, who are worthy of it. Tomorrow morning, I will come to your house with my seven followers.”

The friend said, “I will be waiting for you, but please tell me how I am to treat you.” The voice replied, “We will come in monk’s robes.

Have a room ready for us with water; wash your body and clean the room, and have seats for us and eight bowls of rice-porridge. After the meal, you are to lead us one by one into a closed room, in which we will transform ourselves into crocks of gold.”

The next morning this man washed his body and cleaned the room just as he had been told and waited for the eight monks to appear.

In due time they appeared, and he received them courteously. After they had eaten the food, he led them one by one into the closed room, where each monk turned himself into a crock full of gold.

There was a very greedy man in the same village who learned of the incident and wanted the crocks of gold. He invited eight monks to his house.

After their meal he led them to a closed room, but instead of turning themselves into a crock of gold they became angry and rough and reported the greedy man to the police, who eventually arrested him.

As for the timid man, when he heard about the voice from the grave and brought wealth to the brave man, he went to the house of the brave man and greedily demanded the gold, insisting that it was his, because the voice first addressed him.

When the timid man tried to take the crocks away, he found lots of snakes inside raising their heads ready to attack him.

The king heard about this and ruled that the crocks belonged to the brave man and uttered the following observation, “Everything in the world goes like this. Foolish people are avaricious for good results only, but are too timid to go after them and, therefore, are continually failing. They have neither faith nor courage to face the internal struggles of the mind, by which alone true peace and harmony can be attained.”

A Fantastic Planet, La Planète Sauvage

1

A Fantastic PlanetThe English and French title for an animated science fiction film that was made in 1973, and the entire film is available on YouTube.

Let me take you through a little bit of what the movie is about and what you can gain from it! The movie takes you to a new planet where Humans, called Oms in this film is not the supreme species.

We are kept as pets by the Draags on this planet, filled with fascinating creatures and environments. There are wild oms and domesticated oms, the draags are highly evolved, they can meditate to dematerialize and reform. They communicate telepathically, feed without killing and have highly advanced technology.

Draag CreatureThe start of the movie involves a very dramatic scene that unfolds the story of a little human boy, how he grows up in the Draag environment and how he leads the Oms to their freedom! The animation and sounds in this movie are amazingly synchronized to create surreal effects that take you through a lovely journey bending time, space and reality. The story also depicts human nature very accurately, superstitions versus knowledge and some incredibly beautiful customs.

The concept of what can be achieved via meditation is also fascinating, we do hope you enjoy the fantastic planet! Get a glimpse of the movie below –

6 Ways to Travel the World for Free

5

When pangs of wanderlust strike, what do you do? Would you postpone your plans to travel until the economic situation improves or would you find ways to travel the world for free?

Traveling the world at your paceIf you choose the latter then read on, lets get into the real spirit of traveling. Travel agencies sell all-inclusive packages, tailor-made etc., is like going to the mall and picking a brand new watch. The real experience is far behind. You can go globe-trotting with a lighter pocket, optimism and geared up to embrace new cultures and experiences. That’s all you need!

Feeling the joy of traveling
Just making the plan to travel gets you excited, seeing a new place, breathing fresh air, absorbing the beauty of nature, watching the sunset from top of a hill, feeling the peace within you and around you. Who needs to pay for that?

Free food and accommodation
There are options available on sites like couchsurfing.com, where thousands of people in over a hundred countries allow you to stay in their homes for free. Do some work or perform daily chores and you get a free meal. World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms gives you the opportunity to not only get free accommodation and food but also learn about organic farming.

Travel Slow
work_to_get_free_stay
That will help to a great extent. Move around destinations at a slow pace, so in the bargain you can take up a skillful job like pottery, sculpting, handicrafts etc, and get paid as well or barter for free stay and food. One of my friends did just that. During his visit to India, he started to help out the local craftsmen in South India and made enough to fund his stay at that place. That’s possible if you travel slow and interact with the local community.

Rough it out and you shall receive
This would be the golden rule, if you want a luxurious vacation, you might as well take up a package from a tour operator. If you are willing to forego materialistic desires then the trip would turn out to be extremely light on your pockets. More chances of experiencing different places.

Get out of the urban jungle
If you are traveling from one city to another, doesn’t make sense. The same insecurities will dodge you, fear of getting mobbed, lack of space, no clean air, and so on. Go to a place where you can roll out your sleeping bag or pitch a tent and watch the shooting stars.
i-want-to-travel-the-world-tumblrthe-fandom-fandom-bucketlist-travels-worlds-grgnhz1c
We did that on our visit to Gokarna, that wasn’t the original plan though, but we didn’t find accommodation at Om beach when we reached late at night. The only option was to sleep on the beach under the stars, thats what I call freedom.

Become a travel writer
If you aren’t too comfortable with the above mentioned plans then become a travel writer or take up a job which involves lot of traveling. Travel writers, freelancers, get lot of free junkets, fully sponsored trips to the most exotic places.

Now you know the possibilities of traveling around the world, just plan in advance, make the right choices, show respect for another culture and embrace the simplicity of life.

(Always do your research, read reviews or feedback if you are going through any particular site, and most importantly, be non-judgmental!)

The Artistic Side of Adolf Hitler

7

Painting of Adolf HitlerIt was news to me, probably because history was never my favorite subject in school. But reading about the artistic side of the German dictator Adolf Hitler was quite interesting.

Art was one of Hitler’s major interest, he even tried to make a living as an artist before his rise to power. But Hitler never succeeded, no wonder this aspect of the Nazi ruler goes unnoticed.

Hitler began by painting simple landscapes then he started to imitate scenic postcards, and he use to sell them too, mostly to tourists.

His paintings might not be extraordinary, but when you see the change that followed in his personality from being an aspiring artist to lord of war, its absolutely fascinating. Vienna painting by Adolf Hitler Hitler moved to Vienna when he was 18 with the hope and dream of becoming an artist. He use to stand for hours staring at the grand buildings in Vienna, ponder over how to make them better, see operas and read papers with anti-semitic ideas. Stone arch painting by Adolf Hitler Hitler appeared for the admission test for an art academy, but failed. Disappointed he went to the academy to get an explanation and was told his drawings were unsatisfactory and lacked appreciation of the human form. Art by Hitler, the Nazi leader With the help of a friend he started selling his drawings to tourists, and earned a meagre living from them. He appeared again for the admission test and failed this time too. Castle painting by Hitler So feeling rejected and depressed, Hitler left Vienna to return home and in 1934 he became lord of the war.
Paintings of Vienna by Hitler I wonder what would have become of him if he got through the art academy? History would have been rewritten then! What do you think of his paintings?
