Interview with Bruce Lipton, Part 2: Understanding the Healing Power of Thoughts

4

In the second part of the interview with Bruce Lipton, he talks about using the power of the subconscious mind, how real the Placebo effect is and the healing power of thoughts.

Let’s look into the healing power of thoughts ~

Conscious-subconscious-mind
The subconscious mind operates 95% of the time and the conscious mind works only 5% of the time.

1) How can you use the power of your subconscious mind?

First thing is recognizing this, I am running my life 95% of the time with the subconscious mind. We have now through science found out that thinking takes 95% of our waking lives, which means that 95% of the time you are operating through the subconscious programs. The conscious mind being you and your wishes and desires work only 5% of the time.

If you can rewrite the negative programs in your life and change it to positive behaviors, means 95% of the day you will not be sabotaging yourself with negative programs. Your positive programs will subconsciously run your life and take you to whatever those programs were organised to take you.

Reprogramming the subconscious mind is a long process because the conscious and the subconscious mind is a separate entity, and not one. The belief was that if I can make you aware of something or bring consciousness back into your life then this new awareness or understanding will automatically change the programs in your subconscious mind. This is not true at all. You have to repeat the new behavior all the time as an exercise, and then it will ultimately work.

By just having a belief that I want to change my subconscious program and say this is what I want – is not a conscious thought and it does not change the program. If I find out that my life was all messed up because of the behaviors I got from my family and I say those behaviors are incorrect and I don’t believe in them – it’s the conscious mind’s thoughts about that, this does not translate into subconscious programming.

Some believe that if you repeat a behavior for a long period of time, it might change but in most cases it doesn’t change unless you do an exercise to make it change. If you don’t understand that the subconscious mind works in a different way than the conscious mind then it does take a long time. But if you do understand how to create changes in the programs then it will take relatively short period of time.

hypnosis

If I use hypnosis I can rewrite programs directly in the subconscious mind through a hypnotherapy session. If I want to learn something or change the programming then I make a new behavior and I have to repeat that new behavior everyday and the significance is that every time I repeat the same behavior, the subconscious mind learns.

There is a period of repetition & if you repeat a behavior over and over again, then in a short period of time the new behavior will replace the old program but then to make things more exciting in the world today, there is new psychology program called Energy Psychology or belief change modifications.

These are processes like pushing the record button on a recording device, if you engage in these processes you can create new programs in minutes, this is more exciting in the evolution of change. By creating a super learning state these processes allow individuals to download a new behavior within minutes that will last forever.

The 3 ways of changing the subconscious mind to give you the power back is 1) reprogram it using hypnosis 2) reprogram it using a repetition of a behavior so you get a new habit 3) you can use these new energy psychology modalities to rapidly change existing programs.

2) Is the subconscious mind a connecting link between the finite mind and the collective consciousness?

Simply put, the subconscious mind is a database of programs and the conscious mind is connected to the collective consciousness of the world. But the conscious mind is running the body, essentially like sitting in front of the computer and pulling up programs to run your lives. The conscious mind can create but it creates through the filter of subconscious programming.

Subconscious is a link, a resource of behavior, a program to facilitate life – once you learn how to walk its a habit and you don’t need to learn it again. If there was no subconscious mind everyday you wake up and you wanted to walk you would have to relearn everyday again and again.

Basically if we didn’t have a subconscious mind we probably would never be able to do anything other then get up in the morning and take care of ourselves, because we would have to relearn everyday. Subconscious mind connects behaviors that we use all the time to programs that can be activated by just pushing the button but its not a link between the collective consciousness.

No other individuals have access to the subconscious mind, except through you. It is directly connected to the conscious mind and the conscious mind is you selecting the programs and creating behaviors.

placebo-effect

3) Do you think the ‘placebo effect’ works for even psychological/psychiatric disorders?

Absolutely yes, it does and I will give you the biggest example of all. Around the world today there are SRI drugs (Serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and these drugs include Prozac and billions of people around the world take Prozac. When you see research from the drug companies themselves, Prozac is no more effective than a Placebo.

The answer is how many people get healed taking Prozac, in the sense, they can take care of their lives and hold themselves together and it balances against whatever the problems were. Prozac did not do it, it was the placebo effect that did that, indeed it works for psychological and psychiatric disorders and a billion people using this drug will testify to its effectiveness.

4) The power of intuition or listening to your inner self? Do you think many people are open to that or are unaware?

People might be aware to that intuitive voice or listening to their inner self, but they discount it as not being valuable. They discount it because we are programmed to follow programs. We are taught to do this and this & if the person listens to their inner self, their conscious mind and information coming into them from the source, they don’t give it much value as compared to the programs.

Personally, you get a wonderful thought and you can feel it in your heart or head that I want to do this or don’t want to do this. People ignore that because we have been programmed not to pay attention to these wandering thoughts. This is through our child development, we give more power to the programs that we learn then to our own beliefs about those programs.

This is why so many people have problems in their lives, because their inner selves gives them answers to issues they are dealing with that would help them, but the belief of the individual is they shouldn’t listen to that inner voice.

Most people ignore it and one of the reasons is as children we are never really given a program or told by teachers that listening to your inner voice is very valuable. If we had learnt that as children then we would be much more effective in our lives today and we would pay more attention.

Its a matter of programming this belief and concept that its not important that keeps us from paying attention to it. If we change that and listen to it then lives will change for the positive.

5) How thoughts can heal you physically? If humans are made up of 80% water, then do you think the water we drink also gets affected by our thoughts or intentions?

When I put stem cells which are embryonic cells in a culture and I change the composition in a culture medium, I can change the fate of the cell. This was one of my experiments – I had genetically identical cells in 3 petri dishes and I change the composition, the chemistry of the culture medium, in each of the dishes. In one dish the cells formed bone, in another dish the cells formed muscle and in the third dish they formed fat cells.

What’s the point of this research, the answer is that all the cells were genetically identical, so the fate of the cells couldn’t have been controlled by the genes because they all have the same genes. Rather fate of the cells was determined by the chemistry of the culture medium. In the human body the cells are like skin covered culture dish, with 50 trillion cells, the culture medium is called the blood. If I change the composition of the blood, how I changed the composition of the culture medium, then I affect the fate of the cells.

Simple point when we make culture medium in a laboratory for cells on a plastic dish we try to make that culture medium based on the composition of the blood, from where the cells come from. If I change the composition of my blood, I change the fate of the cells.

The brain is what controls the chemistry of the blood, but the mind determines what chemistry is going to be released. For example – if you have feeling of being in love, your thoughts are I am in love, the chemistry released by a brain in love includes hormones like dopamine for pleasure. This causes to become healthy and happy. The chemistry also releases growth hormone which supports the growth of the cells.

This is why when people are in love have a glow, and this is because the brain is creating culture medium, blood with elements that affect the genetics and activity of the cells. What’s interesting is if I change my thoughts then I change my cells.

So if you are in love and all of a sudden you become afraid that something is going to happen, then love is replaced by fear. The thought of fear releases different chemicals which are stress chemicals or inflammatory chemicals that affect the immune system of a healthy body.

If I have negative thoughts such as fear and stress, I am releasing chemicals from my brain that will shut down the growth of the cells. However, if I maintain thoughts of health, harmony and love, it will lead to growth of the cells.

bruce-lipton-epigenetics

Thoughts can heal you physically because thoughts can change the chemistry of the culture medium and the culture medium, blood, is what feeds and organises the behaviour of the cells.

Second part of the question – Yes, for a simple reason our nervous system works by creating electromagnetic fields or vibrations, things that we can measure with EEG for example.

The significance of that is the electrical activity in the field is picked up by water, water picks up frequencies from the environment and then connects these water molecules through bonds where these frequencies are running through the water molecules, like a vibration running through a field. Water picks up energy – the thoughts that we have are translated into energy by the brain and the energy of our thoughts and who we are can influence the nature of the water.

And interesting enough a friend of mine did an experiment with cells in a tissue culture and crystals and the idea is people understand that crystals absorb energy like batteries. What he did is he gave sick people crystals to hold, and then put them in the culture dish and the bad energy from their illness went through the culture medium and made the cells sick as well.

In contrast, he took crystals that were held by healers and put those crystals in the culture dish, and the cells grew healthfully and happily. The idea is the information in the crystals is translated into water in the culture medium (remember the culture medium affects the growth of the cells).

Jester Guru Chronicles, Part 1: I Am From the Future

4

trickster-god “It is a fire that consumes me, but I am the fire.” -Jorge Luis Borges

Greetings! Your resident trickster-god in training here, with an important message: the future is a wonderfully beautiful place. But you’ll need to become healthier – mind, body, and soul – in order to appreciate it. You’ll need to discipline yourself in the forces of love, compassion, and forgiveness. You’ll need to let Mother Nature become your primary teacher. You’ll need to let Pain become your secondary teacher.

You’ll need to hack your own life and get down to the roots of who you really are: the universe attempting to perceive itself. In short, you’ll need to unlearn what you have learned by an unhealthy culture, recondition what has been conditioned into you, and wash off the brainwash. Like Philip Guston surmised, “To know and then how not to know is the greatest puzzle of all… so much preparation for a few moments of desperate play. To learn how to unlearn.”

Allow me to be the Unlearn to your Learn, the Yoda to your Luke. Any narrative touches only here and there upon the great mystery of life, like a butterfly skimming over the grass, or a photon leaving its trail of discriminate collisions through the stopgap gravity of space and time. And so this narrative will likely fall short. Even still, I have come to elucidate what I can.

After all, we are not merely egos in bags of skin that must be force-fed God, rather, we are walking aspects of the cosmos itself. We are God precisely by letting go of the ideal of God. Not only is this disposition beyond theology and ideology, it is beyond atheism and nihilism. It is beyond good and evil.

It brings us transcendence over meaninglessness and pins absurdity into a state of uncertain gaiety and joyous unity with all things. It frees us to transform the darkness inside us, into the best in us. It liberates our demons into subsumable things. Like Nietzsche said, “The demon that you can swallow gives you its power, and the greater life’s pain, the greater life’s reply.” Swallow the dark and then let there be light.

We Are From the Future

But like I said, you’ll need to learn how to hack your own life in order to gain the courage to take that step. You’ll need to tap into your inner trickster, your inner Infinite Player, your inner Sacred Clown.

You’ll need to break yourself down to the roots that connect you to all things. So consider this article today’s dose of hard love. When you need shelter, I’ll be the rain. When you need a parachute, I’ll be the fall. When your glass house needs a mirror, I’ll be the stone. You can have your personality pigeonholes, Alpha and Beta. I’ll take Omega, and astonish you all. After all… Turning demons into diamonds is my alchemy, baby.
victims into warriors
Transforming victims into warriors is my self-fulfilling prophecy. Breaking molds is my most persistent legerdemain. I’ve hacked the multiverse. I’ve surfed destructive waves of entropy.

I’ve dry gulched the gods. I’ve eaten a thousand egos and I’m ready to eat a thousand more. I’ve inverted polarity in between worlds so many times that I’ve lost track of divergence only to gain providence. I’ve been to the past and saved a thousand Christs from a thousand crosses, turning the spears on power so abruptly that Power itself became nothing more than a pebble beneath my boot.

I’ve been to the future. I’ve pounded the earth with hooves of love as the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse’s noble steed, Providence. I’ve seen humans living in healthy, sustainable balance with the natural world. And I’m here to tell you that it is all ours for the taking. It is there, pulsing on the periphery of our unsustainable world, just waiting for us to embrace it, to breathe it in, to honor it as the sacred dance we were all meant to dance, or die trying.

No social system can base itself for too long on the principles of unsustainability, dancing an unsacred dance. It can only be secured through paranoia. Civilization is like a corpse on our back, a heavy burden. We carry it, connecting various life-support systems to it in a vain attempt to keep it alive because we’re under the illusion that it sustains us; when really it’s crippling us and we’re in denial that it is in its death throes.

Civilization would not be moving so fast if it didn’t have to constantly outrun its own collapse. And it does collapse. I’ve seen it. Though it’s like a dead horse that people keep digging up and beating, over and over again, it does get buried. “There is no clash of civilizations,” Writes the Invisible Committee. Darkness-cannot-drive-out-darkness-Hate-cannot-drive-out-hate-Wake-Up “There is a clinically dead civilization kept alive by all sorts of life-support machines that spreads a peculiar plague into the planet’s atmosphere.”

This dead and dying civilization is steamrolling over us, it’s just moving so slow that it seems like there’s no reason to panic. And while we should be cautious and vigilant, we shouldn’t panic. We should forgive ourselves, and then rise up with a full heart. Like Mark Twain ingeniously opined, “Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.” Revolution is a mighty fragrance, indeed. Not even death can stop those who are free. Like the Mexican Proverb says, “They tried to Bury us. They didn’t know we were seeds.”

So with the authority vested in me by the voices in my head, I give you all permission to hug yourself and say, “I am worthy of being healthy and balancing nature with my own hard-fought-for soul” ten times fast while going mach three with your hair on fire through the unhealthy bulwarks of unsustainability that surround you.
3010677_orig
I give you permission (as if you needed it) to be a force of nature first, a person second. I give you permission to say no to eco-destroying pipelines, and to join our brothers on the front lines of the Idle No More Movement.

Like Rainer Maria Rilke said, “Everywhere transience is plunging into the depths of being… It is our task to imprint this temporary, perishable earth into ourselves so deeply, so painfully and passionately, that its essence can rise again, “invisibly,” inside us. We are the bees of the invisible. We wildly collect the honey of the visible, to store it in the great golden hive of the invisible.”

I’ve been to the future. I’ve seen these beautiful, bountiful bees of the invisible, wildly collecting the honey of the visible. I’ve seen the precarious balance maintained against entropy. I’ve seen Tolerance overcome Hate. I’ve seen Peace conquer War. I’ve seen Empathy topple Apathy. I’ve seen Hendrix’ world of peace where the power of love overcomes the love of power.

I’ve seen MLK’s Dream overwhelm Big Brother’s nightmare. I’ve seen a future where women are respected and allowed to be the most powerful force for good on the planet (Reclaiming the Sacred Feminine). I’ve walked the thin-as-spider-silk tightrope from Man to Übermensch (Redefining the Sacred Masculine). But I’ve come back. And I’ll keep coming back, to empower you, to encourage you, to liberate you, to undeceive you, and to show you the door that leads to joining me there, in the future. There, where we can shine our light together, back through time, like unflappable beacons of hope, showing the way to a healthier more sustainable world for us all.

The Evolution of Consciousness: How are You Experiencing the Higher Dimensions?

11

“Your spirit and every cell of your body has always been multi-dimensional only your conscious awareness is trained to live in the limitations and restrictions of the three-dimensional matrix.” ~ Aurora Ray

It should be no surprising revelation that there are things in this world that exist that we cannot see. Air exists yet we do not see it. Ultra-violet rays exist yet we do not see them. Thoughts and Feelings exist and we do not see those either.

When we think of our external reality on these terms, it’s easier to comprehend the theory that we are existing in multi-dimensional realities simultaneously. Just because we cannot see it, doesn’t mean it is not there or not happening.

evolution of consciousness

The experience of these different dimensions is one that goes hand in hand with the shift in consciousness that so many people are starting to or have been experiencing for some time now.

While the scientific explanations for these experiences is still a little murky and undefined, there is undeniably new revelations on the topic that are happening not only on a personal level but also a scientific level.

As Eileen Seiler, author of, Multi-Dimensional You: Exploring Energetic Evolution, states, “Science is now moving closer to documenting the effects of other dimensional realities. Even with the best technology in the world today, science can only observe effects, not the reality itself.”

For me, I can only speak on how I personally have been experiencing a shift in my conscious awareness and consequently how the experience of feeling my own consciousness on multiple levels or dimensions is being felt.

Evolution of Consciousness: Exploring different dimensions

By exploring our inner worlds and sharing our own personal consciousness transformation stories, perhaps we can compare notes and make some more sense of what it means to be multi-dimensional being.

“You are becoming a new species. The vibrations in and around you are increasing in speed you are all adjusting to these higher dimensional energies (consciously and unconsciously). Without awareness of this process, you may feel lost, overwhelmed, anxious and hopeless. With a shift of consciousness, you can thrive as well as create your future.” ~ Elaine Seiler

First we must explore what the different dimensions are and how can they be identified. The third dimension is the physical/material world, what can be seen and touched. It is the most dense of all the dimensions, and that is why energy appears as actual solid form here.

In terms of our physical body, the way we see the world is with our eyes. Since our eyes exist in the third dimension, meaning they are a physical thing that can be seen and touched, they can only pick up other third dimensional properties or “entities”.

For example, we can only see the colors that are existing in this dimension, but this is only a fraction of the colors that actually exist. Thoughts and ideas are fourth dimensional properties, this is where our “ego” exists. It is in this dimension that things are labeled, “good” and “bad”, “right” and “wrong”.

Since a majority of people are existing in these two dimensions primarily we find that many are still judging and comparing things in the 3d by these measures. The 5d is the newest dimension that is becoming available to us, and it is where the world can be felt and experienced on an energetic level.

For me, personally, my experience of 5d has been an opening of my heart chakra. Instead of experiencing “anger” or “happiness” in terms of an idea my mind has constructed, I have actually felt the energy of the emotion prior to labeling it as anything.

multi dimensional image

All of these dimensions, 3d, 4d, and 5d are now available for us to experience, but it may take some level or practice or a “raising of vibration” in order for us to experience them fully.

However, by merely shifting where our attention is placed, we are able to experience ourselves and how it “feels” to be in 3d, 4d and even 5d or some combination of the three depending on the level of consciousness that we are existing at.

But, if a person is still very much identified with 3d, explaining the concept of 5d would be pointless. The experience of a higher state of vibration is nothing that can be taught but only felt. And unless someone has experienced it they may be able to intellectualize the concept but would not truly know the experience of it.

It’s also important to realize that there is not “finish line” in the practice of raising vibration. I think I can speak for most who are experiencing the shift of consciousness process that as soon as I think I have reached some “plateau” or culmination of, ‘this is the highest vibration I’ve existed at,” life surprises me once again and I get the experience of even higher vibration, which makes this whole consciousness/dimensional journey a life and even after-life long process.

einstein-and-compassion

The concept of multi-dimensionality is new to me as I’m sure to you as well, but by opening ourselves up to the possibility of these theories and concepts we allow the experience of these things to enter our reality.

It is important to remember that we are all on our own individual “shift in consciousness” journeys, and there is no right or wrong place that someone should be at.

You may meet people who seem completely immersed in the physical world to the point where they will believe in nothing that they cannot literally see or touch, and that is ok. Or you may also meet people who have experienced things like astral travel, and may be a little bit more open to other dimensions, and that is ok too.

The mind can only see and comprehend what it is prepared to, so when we apply this to ourselves and people we meet, we see that no one is really “wrong” in the way they are perceiving themselves and the world.

We are all on the perfect path for us, and only time can tell how this whole “ascending into 5d” will pan out, but I don’t think I’m alone when I say that the consciousness evolution has proven to be beyond anything I could have pictured or imagined previously, which is kind of the point.

From my perspective, until an experience is “felt” it cannot truly be understood.

Understanding the Power of the Conscious & Subconscious Mind with Bruce Lipton – Part 1

11

Our thoughts have the power to determine our reality. To understand the working of the mind, we interviewed Dr Bruce Lipton, the stem cell biologist known for promoting the idea that genes and DNA can be manipulated by a person’s beliefs.

He talks about the connection between the conscious and the subconscious mind, and its significance in our daily lives. We are programmed to think in a certain way, to behave in a certain way right from childhood that restricts us from experiencing the life we want because majority of the time (95%) according to Lipton, our life is controlled by the subconscious mind.

We use our conscious mind only 5% of the times, and our conscious mind is where our desires and aspirations reside. Lets understand more about how the conscious and the subconscious run our daily lives. (Due to word constraints the interview is divided into three parts)

Fractal Enlightenment Interview’s Bruce Lipton

Before answering the questions, I would like to summarize very briefly about the difference between the conscious and the subconscious mind, its very important because the answers will all relate back to this understanding.

Explaining the Difference Between the conscious and subconscious mind

The conscious & subconscious mind exist as interdependent elements meaning each is a separate mind but they can work and collaborate together. The significance of saying that is some people think the conscious mind and the subconscious mind are directly connected with each other, so if I change the conscious mind I will change the subconscious program. This is totally incorrect and actually causes a lot of problems in people because the conscious mind learns differently than the subconscious.

Lets first talk about the conscious mind, the latest evolution of the brain is due to a piece of neural tissue right behind your forehead called the pre-frontal cortex. This is the seat of the conscious mind and the conscious mind represents you as an individual, a unique entity. Its probably the connection place of your spirit and source to your biology; the conscious mind represents you.

bruce-lipton

The conscious mind is the creative mind, this is why the conscious mind was so important in the evolution of humans. Lower forms of life are just reactive or reflexive, meaning input/output stimulus response.

The conscious mind offers something different than the subconscious, the conscious mind is creative and as a result of being creative we don’t just need to have stimulus response, we can get a stimulus and change the response each time. But a lower form gets a stimulus and repeats the same behavior over and over again.

Here’s the thing, the conscious mind being creative and connected to you is the mind that has your personal wishes, desires, and aspirations for life. In another words if I say what do you want out of your life, and all the things you tell me will come from the creative conscious mind – it really represents what you want out of life.

The conscious mind can learn in many different ways – watching a video, reading a self help book, going to a lecture, even just going “aha, I have an idea” can change the conscious mind activity. The significance of the conscious mind in its creative character is profoundly different than the significance of the subconscious mind, which is the habit mind.

Deciphering the Subconscious

Subconscious has programs in it, its not very much of a creative mind. Its creativity is more of a level of creativity of say 5-year old child. The subconscious learns in two fundamental ways in normal life – the first 7 years of our life the brain of a child is predominantly in EEG frequency called Theta.

A child’s mind in Theta is not fully in a level of consciousness, its their imaginative mind and that’s why children below 7 have great imagination. Theta is also hypnosis. The significance is during the first 7 years of a child’s brain development, the subconscious is working in Theta and downloading behavior, but its doesn’t download from itself, the subconscious mind acquires behavioral programs by observing other people like his mother, father, family or community.

mind-programming

Those observations are essentially recorded just as on a video tape which is the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is not working at this time so whatever recordings are coming in during the first 7 years of life they are not being critically reviewed by the conscious mind.

Just a note, there are special neurons in the brain that offer the mechanisms of how observing something can become your behavior, these neurons are called ‘Mirror neurons.’ What they actually represent is an organism even lower organisms, dogs, chimps for example, can observe somebody or another individual of their own type, so dog observing another dog, or chimp observing another chimp, can observe their behavior and have a knowing of whats going on in their mind.

You can look at somebody’s behavior and get a feeling of what they are feeling, one is sad and you can see the sadness in them. You can feel sadness because the mirror neurons pick up that observation and give you an opportunity to feel what they are feeling, or do what they are doing.

Very important point is the programs that come into the subconscious mind come in because the mind is in hypnosis and Theta is the predominant state of the child’s brain in activity.

When a child passes age 7, it can add new programs to the subconscious mind, but it does it through the process of habituation, which means you repeat things over and over again – repetition leads to the development of a habit.

A habit is a program in the subconscious mind, so when a stimulus comes in and there is a habit in the subconscious mind related to that stimulus, it will automatically engage into that behavior. That’s what an habit is, all it needs is a stimulus and the program will play itself out.

Conscious mind changes easily, while the subconscious mind is designed not to change very easily for a simple reason – once to learn an important behavior, lets say learning how to walk, it becomes a program. If that program changes everyday then you have to learn how to move around everyday.

conscious & subconscious mind

Once I learn how to walk I want to keep that program, I don’t want to change it. This is why the subconscious is resistant to change because its design is to maintain and keep the learnt program.

The conscious mind can do one special thing and that is think. It can pay attention to whats going on in the world around you, but if the conscious mind is thinking then at that moment it stops paying attention to what’s going on and goes into the thinking space where it tries to resolve what its thinking about.

All of a sudden your conscious mind is absent, because it is busy thinking, and the behavior is automatically switched to subconscious programs.

For eg – you are driving the car and you are imagining something, you don’t stop driving or miss out on what’s going on the road. The moment you have a thought the driving is taken over by the subconscious mind.

Note – the subconscious mind is one million times powerful computer than than the conscious mind.

Creative Detachment: The Secret to Freedom and Happiness

7

“A joyful life is an individual creation that cannot be copied from a recipe.” ~ Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

The universe is both a complicated and a simple thing. As individuals we are interdependent manifestation of the universe, and so we too are both complicated and simple beings.

We are complicated in the sense that we have a sense of self (ego), which seems at odds with our sense of connection (soul), and we are simple in the sense that we are aspects of the universe becoming aware of itself.

The key to freedom and happiness lies between these two senses and is found within the creative process. In this article we will discuss the power of healthy creative detachment and inquire as to how it can give us a healthier perception of reality.

Hungarian psychology professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is known for the concept of the “flow” state. Csikszentmihalyi described flow as “being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.”
bowing
This is the power of the creative process; where we become so completely involved with our art that our ego falls away, and we reconnect with the cosmos in an authentic way, and we become aware that we were always connected to the creative forces of the universe. It’s like opening a door labeled “The Great Mystery” that was always there.

We just needed to open it and ecstasy pours in. But, and here’s the rub, we cannot force ourselves through the opening. We have to sink into it. We have to float through it. We have to allow its natural gravity to pull us through.

That’s why it’s called “surrendering.” Next to meditation, the creative process is probably the healthiest way to surrender.

When we surrender to the creative process, we are surrendering to life and the creative energies of the interconnected cosmos. Such concepts as “flow” begin to surface, and we free ourselves to become an active agent of the creative universe. A big part of surrendering is letting go of expectation. When we let go of expectation we free ourselves to go in flow with the universe.

When we are attached to an outcome, we expect things to be a certain way. And when it doesn’t happen a certain way, we suffer and we feel dejected. But when we let go of our expectations, we free ourselves to be free. We free ourselves from suffering. Letting go of our ego’s attachment to an outcome, frees us to be vulnerable. It frees us from the illusion of perfection. It frees us to be fallible. It frees us to fail.

But even failure cannot stop us once we’ve abandoned the co-dependent perception of expectation, because even failure is just a stepping stone toward being a more individuated person. Luck then becomes a subsumable concept, an energy that’s relative to our disposition. It’s the difference between being a flexible goal-maker focused on a healthy intention, and an inflexible goal-definer attached to an outcome.

When we are attached to the unfolding of a particular outcome, we cannot be grateful or feel unconditional love or enjoy peace of mind. We are so hung-up on not wanting to be stuck that we end up stuck. When we combine the act of letting go of our expectations with an act of creativity, we become creative microcosms surrendering to a greater creative macrocosm.

life_advice_10This is what it means to have a healthy creative detachment. And the result can be magical.

Like Klaus Joehle said, “The Universe is saying: Allow me to flow through you unrestricted, and you will see the greatest magic you have ever seen.”

And it is amazing, euphoric even. The entire universe becomes a fountainhead, pouring through us and into our art.

Creative detachment is courageous creativity. It takes courage to surrender to the artistic process and to allow it to flow. We just have to get out of our own way, and to stiff-arm our egos if need be. To get back to a place where we are free to be like a child at play, immersed completely and totally in what we are doing without the concern of a particular result.

Like Shunryu Suzuki said, “We must have beginner’s mind, free from possessing anything, a mind that knows that everything is in flowing change.”

Detachment is more than just a mindset, it’s a lifestyle. In order to be optimally creative, whether it’s painting a portrait, writing a novel, or manifesting the life we want to live, we must be able to detach from the outcome. There’s a battle going on in our brains over logic and creativity. Detaching from the outcome seems illogical and counterintuitive, but it’s necessary to unleash an optimal creative state.

And the satisfaction gained from creating for the sheer love of creating while divorcing ourselves from the need to have it come out perfectly, is invaluable. It frees us to practice our craft more often and to be more and more creative.

Detached from an outcome, we focus less on quality and more on quantity, and our art becomes free to go through the natural trial and error process necessary to achieve true quality. The journey is the thing, even with the creative process. And especially with the creative process of manifesting the life we want to live.

At the end of the day, having a healthy creative detachment leads to freedom and happiness exactly because it frees us to be fallible. It frees us to be imperfect.

This liberation is the height of ecstasy because we’re no longer hung-up on an ideal; we are instead caught-up in the free flow state of a creative idea. We’re free to flow, in the now, perfectly imperfect with our creative juices flowing and carrying us down the cosmic river that connects us to all things.
