Joseph Campbell’s Four Basic Functions of Mythology

2

“It would not be too much to say that myth is the secret opening through which the inexhaustible energies of the cosmos pour into human cultural manifestations.” ~ Joseph Campbell

At our most basic nature, we are social creatures who love to tell stories. Myths are stories that may or may not be true, designed to be taken into deep consideration rather than believed.

Myths are the path to human understanding, and myth-making is the path to self-expansion and human expansion. Myths help us understand reality. They are the dreams of the universe.

Myth goes beyond science and religion, striking the flint-stone of the magical experience at the heart of all things. In a mysterious cosmos, myth is the attempt to explain the unexplainable through the mystical, leaving us with a sense of astonishment that keeps us engaged and desiring to know more.

Joseph Campbell described mythology as having four basic functions: The mystical, the cosmological, the sociological, and the pedagogical. Let’s break them down.

The Mystical Function

“As the island of Knowledge grows, so do the shores of our ignorance –the boundary between the known and the unknown. Learning more about the world doesn’t lead to a point closer to a final destination but to more questions and mysteries.” ~ Marcelo Gleiser

camp2 This function is about experiencing the awe of the universe. It’s telling stories that touch the cornerstone of what it means to be a human being engaged with the unexplainable.

From ghost stories, to alien abductions, to confrontations with angels, to long talks with God or the gods, and even scientific stories like Schrodinger’s cat and the multiverse theory of reality, the mystical function is important for relating the mind to the mystery that something exists rather than nothing and creating awe and a connection to the sacred.

Myth, especially within the mystical function, links the unconscious to the conscious by tethering latent instincts between nature and the human soul. The stories we tell are the reconciliation of consciousness with the preconditions of existence.

Basically meaning that we tell stories to make sense of our own mortality. We’ve tasted the fruit from the Tree of Good and Evil over and over again throughout the history of the human leitmotif.

We’ve told countless stories of this sacred tasting through art, poetry and music. The mystical function is a sacred reconciliation because it helps us to honor fundamental change and insurmountable impermanence, while helping us to make sense of being or not being in a universe that has no meaning other than the meaning we are able to bring to it.

The Cosmological Function

“Each piece, or part, of the whole of nature is always merely an approximation to the complete truth, or the complete truth so far as we know it. In fact, everything we know is only some kind of approximation, because we know that we do not know all the laws as yet. Therefore, things must be learned only to be unlearned again or, more likely, to be corrected.” ~ Richard Feynman

camp3 This function is about formulating and rendering an image of the universe. The universe we live in is unfathomably huge, inexplicably scary, and perplexingly mysterious. It is so awe-inspiringly enormous that we cannot even wrap our minds around its immense structure.

So how do we explain it? Before science, before religion, we create stories through art, spoken word, and the mighty pen. Using our imaginations, we mythologically lash out. Our five senses explode into the creation myth.

From Hesiod’s Theogony to Genesis in the Old Testament, from Brahma merging with Vishnu and Shiva to the current scientific-based Big Bang theory, cosmogonical myths are at the heart of each culture.

They help us to make sense of the nothingness from which we come. Problems arise when we cling to, instead of learn from, such myths, but they are still important for both the psychological and sociological function of reconciliation.

They give us something to hang our hats on, even if the hat-rack itself is mysteriously inexplicable.

As Joseph Campbell said, “The human brain has no mechanism to recognize what is relevant or what is not. Relevance is an environmental/cultural phenomenon. All value is actualized through imagination alone.”

And so it is through our imaginations first (the mythological hat-rack) that we make sense of the world.

The Sociological Function

“I am not who you think I am; I am not who I think I am; I am who I think you think I am.” ~ Thomas Cooley

camp4This function is about supporting and validating a certain social order. These stories help to bind people to a certain tribe or social group. Sociological myths are the essential building blocks behind all codes of moral conduct.

It maintains the meaning of culture while shaping the meaning of our lives. Even when we’re not aware of it, cultural mythos is working behind the scenes.

It’s the story in the mind. It’s the cartoon in the brain. It’s the way we go about being human in a non-human and sometimes even inhumane world.

And it’s a huge problem when the cultural myth is not in accord with natural order, such as the current Western cultural myth that we are separate from nature when, really, we are nature, interconnected and interdependent. Ishmael’s Leavers and Takers parable is a powerful example of this.

The Greek myth of Pandora is another good example of a myth that upholds a misbalanced culture. The Greeks were a patriarchal society that subjugated women, and the myth helped to uphold and justify that belief. The problem is that it’s not in accord with cosmic order: since healthy human dynamic requires a balance between masculine and feminine energies.

There are many such myths that uphold unhealthy beliefs. It’s our responsibility as healthy creators of myths, in our own right, to learn from such beliefs and create healthier ones (see self-inflicted mythology).

Sociological myths are often stories wherein the moral is about what not to do, which then directly shines a light on what to do in order to achieve a healthier social experience.

The Pedagogical Function

“What we observe is not Nature itself but Nature exposed to our method of questioning.” ~ Werner Heisenberg

According to Joseph Campbell, this is the most important of the four functions. This is the psychological function of myth, which lies at the heart of the other three functions. It’s about how to live a human lifetime under any circumstances.

Such myths touch upon human themes that never change: love and revenge, mortality and immortality, knowledge and lack of knowledge, motherhood and fatherhood, and even mind-stretching stories of male motherhood like Zeus giving birth to Dionysus from his thigh and Yahweh giving birth to Adam and Adam birthing Eve from his rib, or even stories like virgin mothers and immaculate conceptions.

camp5 Pedagogical myths help to shape individuals to the aims and ideals of a particular social group or tribe, guiding them from birth to death through the course of a human life. These are myths that show by good and/or bad example how to live a human life.

They provide patterns of thought that bring meaning to life. Such powerful guidance stories as the Jewish Ten Commandments, Buddha’s Eight-fold Noble Path, Lord Krishna’s Bhagavad Gita, and Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey, for example.

These are vital stories that help us look for the truth within ourselves through the guidance of people from the past (real or not, it doesn’t matter) who have gone through similar trials and tribulations. Such myths as the teachings of Muhammad, the wisdom of the Buddha, the Parables of Christ, and powerful shamanic myths like the teachings of Don Juan. Even trickster myths hold deep wisdom for how to live a sensible and meaningful life in the face of absurdity and meaninglessness.

At the end of the day, the most powerful function of myth is the self-created kind. When we can absorb the teachings of the mythologies that came before us, and then have the courage and audacity to add in our own imaginative soul-signature wisdom, the universe is compelled into revealing itself even further.

We ride the wave of the human leitmotif like daring soul-surfers, Jesus in our Solar Plexus, Buddha in our heart, Lao Tzu in our throat, Vishnu in our third eye, and self-inflicted mythology existentially crowning out between what it means to be a human being within an infinitely magnanimous cosmos.

Understanding Moon Signs and What They Say About You

2

“We are born at a given moment in a given place and like vintage years of wine we have the qualities of the year and of the season in which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything else.” ~ Carl Jung

Have you ever wondered why your horoscopes are often unconvincing? Or why the description of your month’s sign sounds nothing like you, or at best, generic? It’s most likely because the sun sign is hardly enough to describe a person.

A detailed birth chart can be drawn up to review the full person; revealing that the sun sign is just the tip of the astrological iceberg. The real sign to look out for will be the moon sign.

While the sun sign gives a vague overall glimpse of the person; the moon sign delves in to emotions, the unconscious, and how one retreats from fears. It is most common that the moon sign differs from the sun, and this causes our sun sign to seem as if it’s missing a big chunk of us.

We are comprised more of emotions than of exterior, and this is why it is so important to be familiar with the moon sign, because when the sun sign explains what we do, the moon can explain why we do it.

For example, you may have your sun in Capricorn, which can make you very disciplined and ambitious; but mix it with a moon in Gemini and suddenly you’re flying, with a hand in everything, and moodiness on top of it.

There will also be positives to this mixture, as both Gemini and Capricorn are collectors of knowledge. So as you can see, every mixture has a unique chemistry, and unique balances or conflicts within each person.

The moon is also said to represent the instinctual self; the self that is commonly more hidden than the one we show to the world. If our sun and moon (our exterior and interior world,) are compatible, we may have an easier time, as our insides are working together with our outside to present a full picture.

If our sun and moon are in conflict, then we may feel as if we are being pulled in two directions, or that something in us is not working together to present this full picture of ourselves.

It is also possible to have both sun and moon in the same sign, which may lead to a general feeling of single-mindedness in goals. Think of the sun as our wants, and the moon as our needs. If both are aiming for the same then they can proceed without struggle, while those signs that differ may have a harder time getting their sun and moon to compromise on a goal.

To find out your moon sign, enter your birth time and date into the birth chart below. Check where in your chart you find a (yellow) moon symbol, and in what sign it’s placed. This is your moon sign. 6 Practical Ways to Love Yourself

“You can search the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself and that person is not to be found anywhere. You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.” ~ as mentioned in Rājan Sutta: The King, translated from Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.

It is an unfortunate state of affairs when a genuinely kind and compassionate soul forgets to love the one person that really matters… themselves. And sadly enough, this happens all too often for those of us who are natural born empaths, healers, energetically sensitive or spiritually inclined.

It seems as soon as our inner calling begins to bloom in us that tells us that we are here on a mission and that mission is to help raise the consciousness level of humanity, we innocently start our quest in trying to save everyone we meet.

selfloveimage1A part of us knows that we are the light bringers and humanity needs us which consequently may have many of us more focused on other people and their problems as a way to feel as if we are fulfilling our mission.

What many light bearers may not know is that the only person we are really here to love completely and unconditionally is our own self.

Through our own love of our hearts the entire world is transformed, and as we raise our own consciousness level by loving our own hearts we naturally will raise the consciousness level of the planet without having to abandon our self to save “the others.” This realization must hit like a hammer. The only relationship that ever will truly matter or cause lasting change is the relationship with your own self.

As our relationship with ourselves becomes based in love and empathy, the world as we see it begins to transform, as if to mirror back to us the higher and more loving vibration we are residing at. So what exactly does this mean to “love ourselves”?

Below are 6 ways in which you can begin to form a more loving relationship with your own self:

1) Get to know yourself

“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.” ~ Oscar Wilde

If we were to meet our perfect partner what would be the first thing we would want to do with that person? Get to know them better! We would want to know everything about them, what they liked, what they disliked, what their favorite color was, what kind of movies make them happy, what makes them cry, etc.

In order to start the process of loving your own self you must get to know the real you behind what you think you “should” be like. What motivates you? What things are you passionate about? What makes you feel vulnerable? When we begin to truly form an open relationship with our self we begin to cultivate honesty in our being which allows us to be confident in who we are.

As long as we are at peace with ourselves and treat ourselves with the utmost love and compassion we will stand confident in our being which is not only a highly attractive quality to have but helps us to embrace our own uniqueness.

love yourself2) Make friends with your mind, body, and spirit

“You are imperfect. Permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful.” ~ Amy Bloom

Once we really get to know ourselves on a deep and naked level it then becomes time for us to make friends with ourselves, and lift ourselves up from the inside out by becoming our own biggest fan and greatest ally. When we are sad, we offer ourselves emotional support and compassion just like we would to a friend.

It’s amazing how many of us turn on our own self by becoming our own biggest critic as soon as we act in a way that we have deemed less than desirable by society’s standards. Our mind is not always going to be “perfect”, so when we find ourselves beating ourselves up or judging ourselves it just becomes another opportunity for us to love the part of us that judges and criticizes.

Our bodies may not always be exactly where we want them to be, but if we talk to our cells more lovingly we will notice over time we naturally want to eat healthier and we will notice that we feel better as well. As we become more loving towards everything we do we will naturally invite more of our true nature to shine through which connects us to our soul and spirit.

3) Connect to your inner child

A wonderful exercise to do is to think of every single emotion we have as a child inside of our hearts that is longing for our loving attention. Sometimes children in their quest to get more of our attention act out in a negative way just to get us to stop focusing on who or whatever we are focused on and bring the attention back to them.

What many don’t know is that our own hearts do the same thing. When we give our power away to others by making them the ones that have the power to make or break us through their validation and acceptance of us, we inadvertently abandon our own innocent inner child by subconsciously reinforcing the belief that someone else’s opinion of us matters more than our own opinion of ourselves.

It’s as if we are saying to our inner child, “I will accept and love you once so-and-so accepts and loves me, so until I get their love and attention I can’t give you mine.” By treating each emotion we have as a cry for help from our innocent nature and unconditionally loving each emotion we notice that our inner child no longer feels the need to “act up” as a way to get us to focus on him/her.

4) Become your own “safe place”

This happens as a natural result of forming a more loving relationship with our inner child. As our hearts begin to feel safe to feel however they want to feel without fear of being rejected, abandoned or judged as “wrong”, we become the safest person for ourselves to be around. Soon we begin to go through life with a shield around us which allows us to face any adversity without being stressed, worried or afraid.

5) Say “I love you” to yourself

Sometimes the most simple of acts can be the most effective. When “I love you” becomes the thing we say most often to our own self, we energetically begin to vibrate at such a high state that anything of a lower vibration can’t reside in our being.

Many spiritual teachers recommend placing your hand over selfloveimage2your heart while you repeat these words to yourself over and over. As you do this, you will notice an immediate feeling of relaxation and overall feeling of being safe, which is exactly how one should feel while in the presence of someone that loves them.

6) Let your light shine on bright

As the relationship we have with ourselves begins to change we will notice at first that the world is not reflecting back to us our new feelings towards ourselves. Often because we feel shy or guilty about being happy around people who don’t seem to be loving their own selves we dim our shine to make others feel more comfortable.

However, by doing this we not only hurt ourselves but we hurt them in the long run. When we become confident to be our biggest fan and love ourselves from a place of humility rather than arrogance we will begin to give the other people in our lives the permission to do the same.

Soon the world as we know it is mirroring back to us our own light and loving nature.

Exploring the Hollow Earth Theory, What Lies Within?

0

For decades now, the idea that the Earth is hollow with perhaps a hot solid spherical core has captured the passion of scientists, military personnel, historians and story-tellers alike. The theory features in an astounding number of ancient texts.

One of these in Sumerian, the oldest kept records of human history. It’s also been the subject for popular sci-fi literature such as the infamous Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jule Vernes.

hollow_earth

To really study this theory we must go into it with an open mind. The job of the skeptic is not to disregard. One can only be a skeptic if every ounce of information is considered and weighed. Only after that, an assumption can be set in place.

 Hollow Earth Theory in Mythology

Shambhala or Shangri-la meaning ”place of peace” in Sanskrit is found in the ancient scriptures of Kalachakra, Tantra and the Zhang Zhung (the culture that evolved into Tibetan Buddhism). According to legend, only the pure of heart could enter this paradise.

It was free of suffering and old age, with unspeakable beauties and abundant resources. It is also depicted to be a place not of complete physical existence but existing to only those who’s vibration is pure enough to experience it.

Tibetan Buddhists used mandalas to illustrate the relationship between life on the surface and life deep inside. They also speak of a race of ‘super’ people that came up to the surface from tunnels that led to inner Earth to oversee and guide surface beings.

They allegedly had lamas guarding entrances to it inside temples. The Hopi tribe also believed in this race’s intentions to help surface civilization.

The Olmecs and Zapotecs (South America) refer to it as the life force from deep within the Earth. They dug deep caves to get closer to the ‘god of creation’. The Popol Vuh which is known as the Mayan Holy Bible talks about the creation of life from the center of the Earth.

Ehollow_earth_mythologygypt has recently been researched in relation to their brilliant awareness of the spatial dimensions of the planet. The Abados temple hieroglyphics have been translated to reveal that ‘people once escaped into the Earth as if it was a haven from a cataclysmic flood or eruption’.

It is not uncommon to hear about this ‘days of darkness’ story wherein the Earth was submerged.

The Ramayana depicts Rama as a messenger inside an air vehicle from the continent Agartha in inner earth. It speaks of Agartha being the birth place of the final incarnation of Vishnu: Kalki.

A common prophesy binds almost all of these legends and that is; after the ‘barbarians’ of the surface race have nothing more left to conquer, the gates of Shambhala would open to usher in a new Golden Age.

First Scientific References of the Hollow Earth Theory

Edmund Halley (known for computing the orbit of the Halley’s comet) was an English astronomer, geophysicist, mathematician, meteorologist, and physicist. In 1692 he put forth the idea that ‘Earth was a consisting of a hollow shell about 800km thick, with two inner concentric shells and an innermost core, about the diameters of Venus, Mars and Mercury.’

He hypothesized that each of these shells rotated at different speeds and were separated by atmospheres (conducive to life and luminous) and each had their own magnetic poles. He believed that the escaping gas was cause for the spectacular Aurora Borealis.

His theory has it’s base in the value of lunar relative density propounded by Isaac Newton. He also speculated through varying compass readings that the Earth had indeed four magnetic poles. Halley explained, : “the cavity I assign to the Earth may well serve to adjust its weight to the Moon. For otherwise the Earth would leave the Moon behind it and she become another primary planet.”

The Moon had been designed as denser than the Earth so that it could keep up with the Earth in its journey through space. Had the two planets been of similar density, the Moon would have been left behind according to Halley.

Leonhard Euler an 18th century mathematician, physicist, astronomer, logician and engineer proposed that the Earth did not possess any inner circles but instead was completely hollow with a 600 mile diameter sun in the center. The hollow interior could be reached through the holes in the North and South Poles.

John Cleves Symmes an American army officer and lecturer wrote, “I declare that the Earth is hollow and habitable within; containing a number of solid concentric spheres, one within the other, and that it is open at the poles 12 or 16 degrees.”

He tried to organize an expedition to find the opening of the hollow in the North Pole. His plans however were thwarted several times.

Admiral Byrd’s Account

Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd was an American naval officer specializing in feats of exploration. He was an expedition leader, explorer and a pioneer in the field of aviation. His is probably the most famous account of all considering his position.

Operation Highjump was an expedition left solely under Byrd’s command. It entailed a naval expedition to the Antarctic with a fleet of 5000 U.S. military personnel and every resource he found need for.

According to Byrd who was only with his radioman in one of the planes, started to fly above warmer land where he began to experience radio loss and inaccurate compass readings. He claims to have flown over magnificent dwarfed mountain ranges different from anything he’d ever seen, with great lakes and rivers.

He saw mammoths and UFOs surrounding his plane. According to his testimonial, the flying disc-shaped vehicles took over his controls and disrupted his radio signals. They ushered him into a city and eventually land his plane. This is where the story gets really sci-fi.

The ‘Master’ of the city invites him in for a conversation. He tells him about growing concern among his people of Outer Earth’s activities since the Hiroshima, Nagasaki Nuclear Bombings.

Admiral Byrd’s alleged diary was published by his son years after his death. This is where the following transaction between the Master and he comes from ”the dark ages that will come now for your race will cover the Earth like a pall, but I believe that some of your race will live through the storm, beyond that, I cannot say.

We see at a great distance a new world stirring from the ruins of your race, seeking its lost and legendary treasures, and they will be here, my son, safe in our keeping. When that time arrives, we shall come forward again to help revive your culture and your race.

Perhaps, by then, you will have learned the futility of war and its strife…and after that time, certain of your culture and science will be returned for your race to begin anew. You, my son, are to return to the Surface World with this message…..”

You can read the entire diary here

His findings were published in an issue of National Geographic and broadcasted all over media channels. However, this information was quickly hushed up on government orders and he was instructed never to speak about it again.

Watch an early interview with Admiral Byrd here, calling inner earth ‘an untouched reservoir of resources’.

Recent Research on the Hollow Earth Theory

poles_opening_closingBrooks Agnew, a PhD physicist and geologist and Scientific Project Director of the North Pole Inner Earth Expedition has been one of the greatest modern day supporters of Hollow Earth Theory.

Steve Curry the original project director who died suddenly and under mysterious circumstances would’ve been measuring the curvature of the Earth via gyroscope over the Arctic Circle. If the rate of change began to increase that would mean there was a depression or ‘hole’ in the earth.

In an interview, Brooks explains that in 2005, Satellites captured Aurora Borealis on the tips of both the North and South magnetic Poles. The traditional scientific explanation would be that they are an effect of solar winds. However, how would they both be striking both poles at the same time.

This went so far as to intrigue NASA even and they began the Themus program to the find their origin. Agnew also believes that not just earth but other planets too are hollow. He put forth the Expanding Crust Theory.

In simple terms, what is now the surface land mass of the Earth was once its core, and water was possibly almost all that was on the surface before. As the crust expanded, the water slid through the cracks forming a somewhat well distributed land and water body ratio.

This seems legitimate since if you shrunk earth to 1/3rd of its diameter, you’d find every continent would be a perfect fit on all sides. There’s two hard evidences supporting this. The first is that there’s oceanic deposits high up in mountains with fossilized sea life.

The second is that sea floors and dry surface land would have completely different geologic ages, which is also true. Seafloors are only about 70million years old whereas dry land is 4.5 billion years old.

He explains this further on this radio podcast:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNCbk9pfFyQ

Other Observations

– During Earthquakes and tsunamis the earth experiences hours long resonance which only occurs when there is a hollow core, with nothing for shock absorption.

– Gravity experiments show that the core is actually not the center of gravity.

– The Legrange Point (Point of equi-distance from the center of one planetary body to another) from the Earth to the Sun is 1200 meters short of what it should be.

– The Earth has a powerful magnosphere indicative of inner and outer shells and their individual rates of movement.

The temperature gets warmer moving along the Poles which in theory isn’t supposed to happen. Many bird species in the northern and southern hemisphere migrate toward the poles before winter. One bird known as the Roths Gull has been particularly documented but no one has found its resting destination.

Eye witness accounts of differently colored snow reveal possible pollen deposits in the Poles.

The most popular theory today is that the Earth consists of a solid crystalline iron inner core (iron crystallizes at extreme high temperatures). Japanese scientists have confirmed this stating that the lack of resonant frequency means it’s almost pure iron and perfectly spherical. It is possibly around 6000 degrees Celsius which is about the temperature of the sun.

earths_coreThis would make it glow a very white hot flame or fiery red. In an atmosphere of about 800-900 miles of air, it would appear like a twilight sun. This description fits in almost perfectly with those in ancient scriptures that describe an inner sun that warmed inner earth.

If there is a void within Earth, there will most certainly be life. Whether it’s microbial in nature or intelligent life form, it’s hard to say. Refuting this claim completely would be as bad as saying we are the only living beings in this entire, uncharted universe.

We have expansive minds and dynamic consciousnesses, if not to decode the secrets of our existence be it inwardly as individuals with personalities and life-purposes or outwardly to find our place in the larger scheme of things, then what else?

We all have an instinctive eagerness to solve mysteries, to delve into the path of truth. As long as there is consciousness there will be a thirst to unravel it’s origins.

The Ear Massage that Relaxes and Heals: Shen Men

ear points inverted fetus“Embedded within the rigid curves of the external ear are the powerful ear acupuncture points that correspond to every part of the body. This incredible organ, the first of all our organs to develop embryologically, is not only the vehicle for the perception of sound and..but it is also an instrument that fulfills several other equally astonishing functions in the realm of medicine.“ ~ Chinese Auricular Acupuncture, Skya Abbate

Traditional Chinese medicine corrects imbalances in the body through acupuncture, diet and other holistic practices. Just as this ancient healing art defines acupuncture points on the body for treatment of various conditions, similar points are defined on the ear. Known as Auriculotherapy, the concentric folds of the ear have points that correspond to the organs and processes in the body. These points are used to treat pain and alleviate health conditions of the body.

One of the first organs and senses to be formed in the embryo, the ear, is a complete microsystem of the human body, which means it’s a small image of the whole body. French neurologist Paul Nogier believed that the ear is shaped like an upside down human fetus, and the acupuncture points on the ear correspond to the body parts of the fetus shape, with the earlobe representing the head.

Skya Abbate in her book, Chinese Auricular Acupuncture, said, “not only are diagnosis and treatment accomplished through ear acupuncture medicine, but also numerous health disorders can be prevented..”

Out of the 100 ear points, one of the pivotal and master points in this therapy is Shen Men, also referred to as ‘a gateway to heaven’ or the ‘the spirit gate’. Master points are always electrically active in comparison to other points on the ear. Shen Men is located at the apex of the triangular fossa region (the upper mid center of the ear, just above the opening canal & the surrounding concentric folds) of the ear, and used in treating almost all types of ailments, unless otherwise contraindicated.

Benefits of Shen Men

shen-men-ear-acupressure pointSimilar to reflexology, Shen Men when massaged by way of acupressure or stimulated by way of needles in acupuncture, has far-reaching benefits.

Terry Oleson in his book, Auriculotherapy Medicine stated, “The purpose of Shen Men is to tranquilize the mind and to facilitate a state of harmony and serenity.

This master point alleviates stress, pain, tension, anxiety, depression, insomnia, restlessness and excessive sensitivity. It was one of the first points emphasized for the application of ear acupuncture for the detoxification from addictive drugs and for the treatment of alcoholism and substance abuse.”

  • The Earth point (acupuncture) of the Heart Meridian (known as HT 7) is responsible for stimulating the autonomous nervous system, reducing stress, anxiety, combating insomnia and other heart-related issues. Similarly Shen Men has the same energetics as the HT 7 point in terms of grounding, balancing and anchoring the Spirit. “Shen Men quiets the Heart, calms the Spirit, and puts the patient into a state of receptivity for treatment,” mentioned Abbate.Other issues due to stress and anxiety like insomnia, excessive dreaming, tightness in the chest, lack of focus and inability to concentrate and other issues, can be treated by working on this point.
  • Another interesting benefit of Shen Men point is, weight loss. Weight gain is often associated with increased anxiety and stress levels. Therefore, by massaging this point one can release all forms of stress and tension and speed up the process of weight loss as well.
  • A detoxification point, if regulated timely, can help in overcoming addiction and restlessness in the patients. It directly works on the parasympathetic nervous system and relieves any restlessness or anxiety experienced during the process of overcoming any addiction.shen men point
  • Skin diseases like pimples, acne, skin itching and breakouts can also be tackled with Shen Men point. It is known to regulate the heat levels in the body & reduce it, which is the major cause of skin diseases.
  • Inflammatory diseases such as arthritis in the elderly, joint pain and other inflammatory diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, hepatitis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, etc. can be treated with this point in addition to the other ways of treatment undertaken by the patients.
  • Shen Men is directly connected to eye region and is of great help for people suffering from glaucoma and imperfect eyesight or cataract.
  • Shen Men also helps people on their spiritual path, as it calms the mind and aids in meditation, yoga and other modalities pointing towards Zen.

While Shen Men is considered to be an all-pervading point and useful in tackling many ailments, it has few contraindicated diseases. This include bronchitis denoted by phlegm and congestive heart failure issues. Abate adds “The reason why Shen Men is contraindicated for these conditions is because, as a point with Earth energetics, it has a dampening effect. Stimulating Shen Men adds Dampness to these already serious illnesses characterized by Damp.“

  • Once you have located the point, use a ear probe or cotton bud, gently place it on the Shen Men point and move it in circular motions clockwise.
  • You could also use your little finger to massage the point gently. Try to keep your eyes closed as you experience the circular motion and consciously allow your mind to relax.
