The Path of Two Spirit People in Native American Tribes

0

Two Spirit is an umbrella term adopted in Winnipeg in 1990 at the First Nations gay and lesbian conference. It refers to people who carry both a masculine and feminine soul. Many indigenous tribes understood that gender and sexuality are diverse and roles for such shouldn’t be as rigid as society deemed.

Before colonization took over and implanted Christian values on our people, the tradition of the Two Spirit was widely accepted and celebrated. In recent decades, there has been a great call to restore these non-binary third and fourth genders.

Long ago, before the Europeans infiltrated North America, roles_of_two_spirit_peoplemany Native American tribes recognized third and fourth gender individuals. The Natives believed that some were born with the spirits of both man and woman.

Many tribes assigned no restrictions on gender and sexuality and individuals were valued based on their roles among their tribes. Parents did not interfere and dressed their children in gender neutral clothing until such time they decided for themselves and ceremony dictated.

Each tribe had their own words to describe those born with “two spirits”. For instance, the Navajo called them Nadleeh which means : “one in a constant state of change” and the Crow referred to Two Spirits as Bade; meaning “not man, not woman”.

Roles of the Two Spirit people

The role of the Two Spirit people in tribes were highly regarded, as they often became healers, shamans, visionaries and medicine people. They were considered gifted because they embodied both male and female attributes in one body, and could see with the eyes of both genders.

Some tribes held rituals to determine whether a child was Two Spirited and should be raised as such. If the child was seen by their family as behaving differently from their birth gender, they would then set up a ceremony to decide the fate.

One such ritual involved setting a circle of brush and placing within it a man’s bow and a woman’s basket. The child would then be asked to choose which item they would take as the brush was set afire. If the child took the item opposite of his or her biological gender it was considered confirmation. Typically, this ritual took place during the child’s fourth year.

Another ritual that sometimes took place during the preteen years of the male-bodied Two Spirit was set up as a dance circle. Unbeknownst to him, the child would be watched as to whether or not their dancing was considered feminine and thus determined the path to the Two Spirit.

The role of the Two Spirit among their tribe varied. Male-bodied Two Spirited individuals often dressed in female clothing and took on the role of caregiver and nurturer. They would perform typical feminine tasks such as child raising, cooking and sewing.

This image is believed to be a Spanish depiction of Balboa’s dogs attacking sodomites. The torturing of berdaches by conquistadores.

Likewise, female-bodied Two Spirited people often wore men’s clothing and would hunt. Their gender did not typically dictate their sexuality however many proclaimed as Two Spirit did take a spouse of the same biological sex. All genders were loved and accepted and encouraged by members of the Tribe

Stigmatisation of the Two Spirit People

By the time the Europeans colonized the land, both church and the government deemed those identified as Two Spirits as perverted and non traditional and gender roles were enforced upon them. The word coined then for those outside the gender norm was “Berdache”, which means “kept boy” or “male prostitute”

Because of the shame felt during oppressive situations such as residential schools and marginalization, the rituals and beliefs were eradicated. Instead of honour and respect, Two Spirited people were now cast out of their tribes and commune rejected.

Two Spirit People

In recent years, as the spectrum of gender and sexuality has broadened and more people are aware that gender is not just binary, the Two Spirit people are speaking out. They wish to reclaim their roles among their tribes and reinstate old traditions and ceremonies.

However, their oppression continues as cultural appropriation rises and non natives declare themselves as Two Spirit. What once was revered among First Nation and Indigenous people, has become somewhat of a joke and mockery.

Through education and awareness of the suffering of these people, perhaps they can again began to thrive in their culture and reclaim the status they once had. They have much to offer, not only their individual tribes and clans but the world as a whole as well.

4 Simple Yet Controversial Ways to Be a Better Human

0

“In art and dream may you proceed with abandon. In life, may you proceed with balance and stealth.” ~ Patti Smith

Despite any current or coming storms, there are surprisingly simple strategies toward remaining a patch of clarity, courage, compassion, and calm in the face of nationalism, racism, tyranny, and hate.

Unfortunately, within a sick society, these strategies seem to be controversial and counterintuitive. They are so controversial, in fact, that most people would rather just be consumed by the storm, getting lost in the rhetoric of divisiveness.

At least the storm makes sense and jives with the narrative of the status quo. But that’s only because our sick societies have divided us from each other and from the truth that everything is connected.

Simplifying things makes this crazy ride that is the human condition a little easier to digest, a little easier to navigate, and a little easier to enjoy. It’s not as complicated as we tend to make it. Neither is it as serious or as personal as we tend to take it.

With just a little psychosocial navigating through the briar patch of our own cognitive dissonance, and a little ninjaneering of our cultural programming, we can all take these simplifying strategies into deep consideration and begin to resonate with them to become better humans, despite any and all storms seeking to overwhelm us.

Make your birthplace Earth:

a human2“The old appeals to racial, sexual, religious chauvinism and to rabid nationalist fervor are beginning not to work. A new consciousness is developing which sees the earth as a single organism and recognizes that an organism at war with itself is doomed. We are one planet.” ~ Carl Sagan

It’s so simple it’s ridiculous. We’re all earthlings. We’re all in this together.

We’re all flying on a little blue dot through the darkest darkness that any of us can possibly imagine, and yet here we are, fighting over imaginary lines in the sand, and preaching at each other, through blind fervor and ignorant zealotry, outdated and parochial platitudes reeking of dogma and divisiveness.

We’re all so caught up in the melodrama of control and ownership and “mine, mine, mine!” that we’ve forgotten what’s primary in order for us to evolve as a healthy, sustainable, and moral species on an ever-changing planet: flexibility, cooperation, and “ours, ours, ours!”

This is our planet. All of ours! Nobody owns it when everybody needs it. Borders are outdated, lizard-brain, knee-jerk reactions to our desperately short time on this planet, and our desperate, existential misunderstanding of impermanence.

Nationalism and patriotism are blinding cartoons in the brain running on autopilot from years of enculturated propaganda.

It turns out human psychology is a terribly easy thing to manipulate. Destroying our planets ecosystem to gain imaginary wealth is just plain stupid, and yet here we are, ignorant bystanders and accomplices to ecocide.

As Victor Hugo said, “Sacrificing the earth for paradise is giving up the substance for the shadow.” Make your birthplace earth, and then see how fast your codependent (and even your independent) tune changes to one of interdependence.

Make your race Human:

a human3“I salute the light within your eyes where the whole universe dwells. For when you are at that center within you and I am at that place within me, we shall be one.” ~ Chief Crazy Horse

As I wrote in 7 Signs You May be a Rainbow Warrior, “Your skin may be white, black, brown, red, yellow, or whatever other stereotypical color you wish to marginalize your skin color with, but your heart is red. It bleeds red no matter your race, nationality, or creed. We are all united in red, and the red nation has the potential to rise again and it can be a blessing for a sick world.”

Indeed. When you focus on the heart, you realize that we’re all in this together. We’re all human beings fighting the hard fight of mortality. We’re all wrestling with this thing called life which not even one of us can explain with any amount of authentic certainty.

As the Carl Sagan said, “Every one of us is, in the cosmic perspective, precious. If a human disagrees with you, let him live. In a hundred billion galaxies, you will not find another.”

Again, it’s so simple it’s ridiculous –of course we’re all human, of course our lives are precious and short. At those times when we’re most at peace with ourselves, usually during solitude or meditation or both, that wise elder inside us does an ancestral facepalm, “How could I have forgotten!” And we do forget. All the time. How could we not?

Surrounded as we are by all the political ballyhoos, and religious hullabaloos, and racist cuffuffles. It’s all such a cacophonous commotion of existential discontent; the thrashing about of an adolescent species trying to figure out how to grow up. Hint: it takes a village, and that village is the entire human race living on a shared planet.

Make your politics Freedom:

a not master“If the matrix gives you Trumpocalypse, then use secret alchemical means to create matrix-shifting Trumpocalyptic lemonade.” ~ Rob Brezsny

This is a tough one, though it seems simple. Just be free. But it takes a lot of work to maintain freedom. That work is usually in the face of an entity seeking to take your freedom away. You just need to have the courage and the audacity not to allow it.

We’re all born free, and yet somehow we become… not so free. From debt slavery to soft slavery to direct slavery, humanity is exasperatingly unfree. This is typically due to people doing the opposite of the four basic strategies in this article while wallowing in the muck and mire of statism.

Making your politics freedom is difficult because of the ever-looming power of the state and its destructive and globalizing man-machine which hangs over your head like a Sword of Damocles, threatening to take your freedom away if you do not comply with its outdated, immoral, and tyrannical demands.

It’s all too easy to comply, giving into debt slavery as if we’re in debt to anything except an abstraction of an abstraction. It’s all too easy to obey, giving into soft slavery like a house slave who has everything they need as long as they obey the master of the house.

It’s all too easy to bury our heads in the sand while our masters and rulers draw lines in it, screaming from their baby-like, tyrannical mouths, reeking of Goliath-breath: “Mine!”

Make your spirituality Love (detachment):

“In the end, I want my heart to be covered in stretch marks.” ~ Andrea Gibson

a human4Again, so simple it’s cliché. The oldest cliché, in fact. “All you need is love.”

But out beyond notions of ownership and control, beyond the illusion of permanence and perfection, there is a love so powerful that it crushes all other forms of love hitherto: detachment, also expressed as non-attachment.

Detachment is the key to authentic love. It’s so powerful that even detachment from it being the key to authentic love is the key to happiness.

And it goes further: It’s so meta-powerful that even detachment from the detachment from it being the key to authentic love is the key to happiness is the key to laughable joy and ecstatic jouissance, tantamount to existential masochism. And it goes even further, but you get the point.

When you make your spirituality loving non-attachment, you obliterate obstacles, both real and imaginary. Your soul is finally allowed to breath. You suffocate Rigidness and crucify Dogma, allowing for the shadows to reveal their light, and the light to reveal vital hidden shadow knowledge that we were once blind to.

Authentic compassion becomes manifest. Love becomes insurgent, Agape-perfect in its imperfect dance with an interdependent cosmos. When we make our spirituality love, the entire universe falls under the umbrella of our numinous reach into interconnectedness with all things.

And suddenly we’re not so small. Suddenly the world becomes more precious. Our humanness becomes more of a tragically beautiful brotherhood. Our political thrashing about inside obsolete boxes of statism seems petty and trite in the grand scheme of things.

Suddenly it becomes that much easier to be a better, more loving, human being. As the mystic Mooji surmised, “Step into the fire of self-discovery. This fire will not burn you. It will only burn what you are not.”

5 Ways to Nurture Happiness Within

0

“It is not easy to find happiness in ourselves, and it is not possible to find it elsewhere.” ~ Agnes Repplier

Happiness means something different to each and every person. One person’s “happiness” is another person’s nightmare. Therefore, to suggest that there could be a step-by-step process to get to the end goal of feeling “happy”, would be to discount the billions of different perspectives and versions of what happy really means, and yet, true happiness is what almost everyone is looking for.

If there’s not a one-size-fits-all version of a “happy life,” then it means that happiness is a feeling we must cultivate within our selves, based on our own personal dreams, desires and wishes.

Nurturing happiness within our own being is an ever-long process. But if we’re lucky as time progresses and we become more in tuned with our inner world and our true nature, happiness is what we will feel a majority of the time.

Below are five ways to cultivate the feeling of happiness within

1) Know that nothing outside of you can bring true lasting happiness

“Happiness is a state of mind, a choice, a way of living; It is not something to be achieved, it is something to be experienced.” ~ Dr. Steve Maraboli

To believe that anything or anyone is going to provide an endless supply of satisfaction or fulfillment would be a misstep. Nothing outside of us can ever be the source or reason for our lasting happiness, because eventually it just becomes another thing that we are afraid to lose.

When we are afraid to lose something it begins to sneakily become another attachment that we are depending upon to make us feel ok, which translates to a soul who is afraid to change and let go of things.

By walking in to every exciting new purchase, or job, whatever it may be with the knowing that this thing, although has brought excitement or feelings of joy to our life, will at some point come to an end or change, we give ourselves the permission to enjoy everything but also be willing to move to better horizons ahead when it’s time to move on.

 2) Accept everything about yourself

Have you ever noticed that as soon as you accept a situation as it is without fighting it or trying to change it anymore an instant feeling of peace overtakes you? That is because we are not here to have a showdown with life and to manipulate and control every outcome.

We are here to come into alignment with unconditional love which starts with acceptance. By accepting everything about ourselves, everything about our lives, (even if that means accepting that we don’t know how to accept, like fear, failure, or defeat), this is the energetic antidote to transforming judgments into inner peace.

Many people are afraid to accept what they don’t like about themselves or their lives because they think that to accept it is to either manifest more of it, or to tell the universe that ‘this is ok with me, I don’t want things to change.”

Nothing could be farther from the truth, our higher selves already knows what our soul’s deepest desires are, and it’s trying to guide us to those things by helping us unravel limited belief systems.

Before that it needs us to lay down our personal will by way of unconditional acceptance of everything happening to us, so that it can come through and resolve things on our behalf.

3) Follow your bliss

The universe guides us always into the most fulfilling choices, and circumstances by feeling excited. And following our excitement doesn’t have to mean spending every day jumping out of airplanes or buying expensive things.

It only means that throughout each day, pay attention to the choices that feel better or more blissful in your body, it may be reading a book vs watching a tv show or drinking tea instead of coffee, but whatever decision brings with it a good feeling will lead to more and more exciting choices, which eventually turn into bigger and better possibilities being invited into your life.

4) Let love make all choices

Imagine a life where you only put the most loving things in to your body, where the words you speak to yourself and to others come from a place of love, where all adversities are met with the most loving approach.

This is truly the secret to happiness. The happiest people are those that allow love to guide them, that take the high road when in doubt, and let it show the way. This one intention alone, will drastically improve the quality of our lives.

5. Stop looking for it

So much unhappiness and suffering stems from the underlying belief that something is happening that should not be, or we are feeling something that we shouldn’t. To think that something is happening that is not supposed to is the source for most suffering in the human existence.

When we switch our perspective to stop wishing things to be as they aren’t or wishing to feel something that we are not, we learn the art of true surrender. With surrender we learn true inner peace and ultimately happiness.

Make peace with yourself and your life exactly as it is in this present moment, even if that means making peace with the fact that you wish your life looked differently. Ironically, happiness is never something that we find as a result of (insert goal or achievement here), it’s something that we come into alignment with as soon as we stop looking for it.

25 Feng Shui Tips to Increase Prosperity

0

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that has been in use for thousands of years because it works. It is based on an awareness of the movement of Chi, or life energy, within and around our surroundings.

Through centuries of detailed approach, it has found a correlation between the placement and orientation of the objects in our personal spaces and balance in our daily lives. In the simplest of terms, it’s a guide to arrange your space so you can live a better life.

To truly master Feng Shui takes years of study, but the good news is that it only takes a few, simple adjustments for you to realize its benefits.

Here are 25 tried-and-true tips that will increase the flow of fortune in your favor:

Clear your Clutter
feng-shui
A clean and organized space is a balanced space. If you are hanging on to too many things, or it’s been a while since you really scrubbed and organized your space, you might be unknowingly impeding the flow of abundance. The following four tips work because they help you to release the old, take stock of what you have, and make room for the new.

  • Keep your home, office, and vehicle clean and organized. Get rid of anything you no longer need or use, clutter, or anything that reminds you of a negative memory. You want to clear some space so new things will come to you.
  • Upgrade the entrance of your home, office, or room. Put a fresh coat of paint on your front door. Use metallic fixtures, such as door knobs and light features, and put out a fresh, new welcome mat. Add some fresh plants or flowers, and make sure the area is well-lit. When you make your entrance inviting, you attract new opportunities your way.
  • Keep your kitchen clean, and your pantry and fridge organized and well-stocked, to represent abundance.
  • A stove symbolizes the ability to feed your family. Always maintain a clean stove. Make sure all of the burners function properly.

Respect Your Finance

talismans_of_feng_shuiIt’s common to develop a love-hate relationship with money, but if you want to attract more of it you have to find some way to respect it. The following tips work by subconsciously training you to value the money you already have.

  • Put a # 8 in your wallet. Eight represents infinity, an endless loop of abundance. You can also try putting an eight in your checkbook, your purse, or near the place where you pay your bills.
  • Upgrade your wallet. Choose one in any of the money colors (green, red, purple or metallic) and make sure to replace it when it becomes worn. Do not use a second-hand wallet, and do not keep family pictures in the wallet. Both of these discourage the flow of abundance. Don’t forget to keep it clean and organized.
  • Get rid of any torn dollar bills and replace them with crisp, fresh ones.
  • Do not leave checks and bills out in the open where you will be reminded of money going out of your life. Organize them, pay them, and store them neatly in a closed space such as a drawer or file folder.
  • Find a designated location to store your purse or wallet when not in use. Don’t toss it on the floor or into a closet or a drawer. Treat it as a respected receptacle for your money.
  • Pick-up any loose change lying around and put it in one designated space, such as a colored or metallic container, an ornate box, or even a piggy bank. Not only does this keep your space neat, but it reminds you to respect the money you already have.

Amplify Abundance

bowl_of_fruit_by_simplistic_scionAbundance is in the eye of the beholder. The following tips work to amplify the abundance already present in your life.

  • Put a large bowl of fruit on your dining table to represent plenty.
  • Place a mirror to reflect your dining table to double the abundance it represents.
  • Hang a mirror to reflect your stove. This will increase the amount of burners you can see, which abundantly signifies the amount of people you can feed.
  • Keep all of the items in your life in good repair, and only choose to keep the ones you really love and that represent whatever abundance means to you. In Feng Shui, everything you own should provide purpose or meaning to you, otherwise you become its caretaker and it begins to own you.
  • Wear clothing that is neat, clean, feels comfortable, and represents you as a person with self-esteem, self-respect and affluence.

Decorate your Abundance Area

According to the western, or Black-hat school of Feng Shui, the abundance section of your home is in the back, left-hand corner of your space as you are facing the front entrance. The following tips make use of the energies in this spot to increase your prosperity.

  • Accent the area with the colors purple, green, metallic and/or red. Try using candles, vases, pillows or fabrics in these colors throughout your home.
  • Make use of the number 4. Group items in fours, such as pictures, books, pillows or tabletop items.
  • Place a jade or bamboo plant here and keep it healthy. However, if this area is a bedroom, skip the plants.
  • Decorate with some items made of wood, such as picture frames, lamps, or furniture.
  • Represent the rectangle with items such as a trinket box, basket or wall art.
  • Put something moving here to represent wind, such as a mobile, windmill or fan.
  • Use crystals that represent wealth, such as citrine, red or purple jasper, amethyst, jade, chrysocolla and/or pyrite (fool’s gold).
  • Add a fountain. Be sure the water flows toward your house and not away. Skip this step if the location is a bedroom.

fish-feng-shui-tips

  • Keep an aquarium with goldfish or an Arowana. Make sure it remains clean and in good working order. Again, skip this step if this is a bedroom. Water brings out heavy emotions when placed in a bedroom.
  • Add items that remind you of wealth or good fortune, such as gold coins, banks, pictures of money, or any items that make you feel luxurious.

Feng Shui is a fun and easy way to attract all that you want out of life. Each of these 25 tips are simple to execute, yet the possible benefits are unlimited. If you use them, make sure to allow some time to pass before you expect results, and make sure to be grateful as the continued abundance starts flowing your way.

When you feel abundant, you will attract abundance.

Cognitive Reframing: Changing Negative Thoughts into Positive Ones

2

“We are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences – be they positive or negative – make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives.” ~ B.J. Neblett

Our experiences can awaken an emotional response, whether positive or negative is largely dependent on the emotions triggered within us at that point of time.

The memory of that experience stays with us, archived in our mind based on the label we give it and when you share this experience with others you tell the story of how it made you feel.

We are the sum total of our experiences and it is our experiences that mold us. What if you can redefine or change the negative memories associated with a particular event in your life?

Cognitive reframing is a psychological technique that helps identify and confront negative or irrational thoughts and view it from a different and positive perspective.

For example, you’ve had a terrible breakup, and the memory associated with that relationship would probably be negative as well. When you tell yourself a different story, it changes your physiological response to that experience.

In this case, when you shift your perspective about the relationship and tell yourself that it taught you a valuable lesson instead, you change within. It’s a conscious shift in a person’s mental perspective that reinforces your power to reframe any thought you ever have into something more positive.

Cognitive reframing is not only restricted to past experiences or memories; it can also be your belief systems that are ruining your present or getting in the way of achieving certain life goals.

How does cognitive reframing work?

1) Become aware of your thought patterns and reactions to them

cognitive reframing

An important step before you shift your perspective. If you aren’t aware of the emotions triggered by certain memories, how can you go about changing them?

We aren’t talking about suppressing your negative emotions, but realizing them. When you think of a particular memory how does it make you feel. Now try interpreting it from a different perspective, try putting yourself in the other persons shoes or even gaining an overview perspective.

Try imagining how easy it is to snap when the going is tough, let it go, let it flow open up you heart to forgive and this will help you overcome a situation and increase your psychological well-being.

When you become aware of your thoughts, it becomes easier to take note of it and view it through ‘new eyes’, or at least try to.

2) Meditate to reduce negative self-talk

Honestly I don’t need to say more about the effectiveness of meditation. Become an observer of your thoughts instead of getting caught up in them, let them pass by like a flowing river. Not getting stuck anywhere but finding a new way to float through this journey called life, will allow you to experience them without judgement or shame.

Sogyal Rinpoche mentioned in The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, “We often wonder what to do about negativity or certain troubling emotions. In the spaciousness of meditation, you can view your thoughts and emotions with a totally unbiased attitude. When your attitude changes, then the whole atmosphere of your mind changes, even the very nature of your thoughts and emotions. When you become more agreeable, then they do; if you have no difficulty with them, they will have no difficulty with you either.”

Meditation doesn’t need to be boring, we have ways to meditate even without meditating. You could also have a focused meditation on curbing the negative self talk. If you like experimenting we have the different methods of meditating and don’t forget chanting does wonders as well.

cognitive reframing cartoon e1478873023951
3) Replace your thoughts with more positive ones

It is difficult to overcome a painful past, but wallowing in it for long is not going to lead you any where. Transform your negative self-talk, retell the story in your head so you begin to believe in it.

Research has shown that our memory changes each time they are recalled, so the story is never exactly the way it happened. So why not rewrite it the way we want?

Look for the ‘gift’ in each situation, and see how your stress levels reduce. Negative thoughts and emotions present an opportunity to cultivate mindfulness. See them in a way that still fits the facts of your situation, but that is less negative and more optimistic. This is how you create you reality, why not make it a better one for yourself. When you become happier you automatically spread the joy around.
